I would just like to get everyone's opinion on the different patterns of nuring on a med/surg floor. Do you prefer Primary or Team nursing? Team nursing is synonymous with POD nursing. WHich includes an RN,LPN, and Aide with a group of pts.

We have the Team approach on our Med/Surg floor and I couldn't live without my CNAs!!! I really just can't imagine having all of my RN duties and have to do primary care, too. (Please understand that I know it is all Nursing care....Not saying it is beneath me, just that I wouldn't have time to get all of it done in an evening!)

I have heard hospitals talk of going to it and can understand some depending on acuity but I doubt, though may be wrong, that too many will achieve primary care. I think what it boils down to is economics and availability. Right now a nurse depending on the patient acuity can have 8 on up patients with the team approach. With primary care, the patients would have to be drastically reduced, the facillity would have to have more nurses then they do now.
