Hello,
I'm a BSN RN New Grad and thinking of going to be a school nurse. I would like to obtain the Preliminary School Nurse Services Credential. I've been googling and searching a whole lot but cannot find out how to apply for it and what the requirements are. I'm hoping to get that credential to be qualified for the school nurse positions I'm planning to apply to. Any helps/suggestions/comments would be greatly appreciated.

Professional Certification provides an ongoing, quality credentialing process for eligible school nurses. Certification assures a national standard of preparation, knowledge, and practice.
The National Board for Certification of School Nurses (NBCSN) endorses the concept of voluntary certification by examination for all school nurses. Professional certification in school nursing provides an ongoing, quality credentialing process for eligible school nurses. Certification represents a national standard of preparation, knowledge, and practice. To assist with this recognition, the NBCSN provides the opportunity for school nurses to set the standards for their specialty area through voluntary professional certification.

What do you mean by "Emergency School Nurse"

Talk with your school district. The Emergency certification can be
often obtained through your state education board. It will provide you
the opportunity to work as a substitute RN secondary to emergency staffing
need. Your school system will apply on your behalf stating emergency staffing need.
Ask if your State has a State School Nurse certification available.
These courses are often available at a local state college.
The courses often include material specific to the laws and what is
required for students statewide, ie eye test etc ,immunizations and what you
need to make sure each student meets the health requirements, ie
up to date physical.
Esme12 has provided you with the National certification for School Nurses,
again check with your state education dept as you may need the
State Certification to work at first. You can then go for the National
Certification on your own, ask the school nurses in your area if
they have this certification.
Also, in some states you need to courses in education and pass a
teacher certification test unrelated to nursing. Many systems are
union and this is required to work in School nursing for those systems.
Not usually required for substitute school nurses.
The job title is often School Nurse Teacher.
Sorry if this is clear as mud, please pm me and I will try to
make it crystal clear.
Oh, I see it is state to state based......interesting.
