Preemie/NICU-isms

Specialties NICU

Published

Hi nurses,

Would you please share your funny preemie/NICU pet names for things, like some of these for example:

first attempt at breast-- "meet and greet"

under oxyhood-- in da 'hood

c-pap-- elephant impression

coming off of monitors-- (baby's name) unplugged

etc

I hope you don't mind this frivolous request. As a preemie mom I along with other preemie parents found these amusing bits of NICU humor a very welcome comic relief.

Thanks

Wen

That particular bed is called an Omnibed...but we call them "Cadillacs" instead, to each other and the parents. It's the top-of-the-line of all neonatal beds right now, and actually DOES cost as much as a Caddy.

Are these the same as the "giraffe" beds?

Yes - they are Giraffe Omni Beds

They make two kinds - one is the Omnibed, which converts into a radiant warmer, and one is the regular Giraffe, which looks similar but is only an isolette, the top doesn't go up.

If I remember correctly from the inservice the Ohmeda rep gave us...the Giraffe Omnibed is about $35,000 and the regular Giraffes are $17,000.

The top does go up to convert to a warmer on ours......so I guess it is the same... I forgot for a sec that "Omnibed" was the "brand" name....I wonder why they call the isolette one a Giraffe also, as I remember the rep saying the name was in reference to the top going up, as in tall like a giraffes neck.....

There is the Giraffe Omnibed and the Giraffe Incubator. I really wish we had more Omnibeds - we only have one, and a handful of their incubators. I am so jealous of the units that have all Omnibeds, enough for the whole unit - where do they get that kind of money?!!? It would cost over 1 million dollars to get us that many!!!

Well, we have 3 of the omnibeds, reserved for the microchips, but NONE of the isolettes!!!!..... go figure and.... those 3 were donated by a family from the NICU... they were wealthy (obviously) and were traveling to the united states when she went into PTL and delivered at our hospital.......all the other isolettes have at least one thing that isnt working, whether it be a cabinet door, port hole, servo, etc.... lol in one NICU I worked in, I used to call it the "third world NICU" lol... sometimes we literally had to go to other floors to find things like, feeding tubes, angiocaths, and , no im not kidding---- alcohol preps!!!!!! And we had to fight for the most decent isolettes.. But--- thats a whole 'nother thread!!!:chuckle

We tested one of those Giraffe Isolettes in our unit but no one liked it. I think it is better suited for smaller babies. (Would that be correct?) We had a load of big babies at the time and it was really annoying because we had no space to work. but I liked that it had so much stuff built into it (scale, bili light, converts into isolette) I thought it was really nice but maybe suited for a unit that gets smaller sicker babies.

I agree, it's best for smaller babies. Honestly, if your unit that doesn't get micropreemies, it's probably a waste of money and you could buy a couple of other isolettes or radiant warmers for the price of one Omnibed. The best thing about the Omnibed is that you can admit a tiny baby, insert all the lines and stuff (possible inside an isolette but much easier in a radiant warmer), and then turn it into a humidified isolette right away, without having to move the baby.
