preceptor waiting room

Published

I am a senior nursing student in practicum and I still don't have a preceptor! it's been a month since comps and it seems everyone else in my cohort started weeks ago.

essentially, I've done everything I needed to in order to start my practicum, including picking my badge up from my site's office. the last time my clinical instructor reached out to me was a week ago. the worst part of this is that we, as students, are not allowed to contact our clinical sites, which leaves us with very few options .

at this point I'm worried about not being able to graduate on time (after six long combined years of college) and I'm feeling a bit hopeless. I can't even make life plans more than a few days in advance because -what if I randomly get my assignment-

honestly, I would not wish this on anyone.

have any of you experienced something similar?

Why isn’t your school assigning preceptors?? And what suggestions did your CI have last time she “reached out to you?”

I would take that to mean that the school will reach out to the clinical site if there is an issue.

I would contact your school pronto and pleasantly let them know this is your expectation. Something like, "I need some assistance with getting in touch with my preceptor for my practicum. I haven't heard anything from the clinical site and haven't been able to start my practicum..."

Hope it gets straightened out ASAP because this is unacceptable.

You need to document every contact you make. I would email the clinical instructor daily. If there is an issue of you not getting your clinical hours in by the end of the semester you have proof that starting your preceptorship was out of your hands.
