precepting with MD vs. FNP?

Specialties NP

Hi all,

I am an FNP student and am starting clinicals. I was wondering what some of the advantages/disadvantages of precepting with an MD versus FNP are? Does anyone prefer one over the other? Thanks!

I precepted with a psych NP and also with the psychiatrist that I work with now. I had valuable learning experiences with both. I think though it really depends on the individual you are with. I recommend getting preceptors that you already have a good working relationship with if that is possible. Good luck with school!!

There are actually huge debates and academic discussions regarding this topic. Do a journal search...very interesting!

I've done clinicals with both and honestly it depends more on the person than the degree behind their name. I've been with a wonderful MD who is part of a patient mill (i.e. turning out patients every 10 minutes) and she rarely did any patient teaching, preventive care, etc. But then I did a cardiac rotation with another MD who had spent a lifetime devoted to patient teaching and prentive care and I learned SO much from him. There are some NPs who have completely "lost their way" so to speak and forgotten some of the foundations of practice in their attempt to blend in at an office that clearly values only patient volume.

I precepted with both, and like others said, it's very much depends on the individual. However, I have to say I enjoyed my time with the NPs more. They "got" what being an NP is all about and were more supportive of my learning goals. It was also good to observe how an MD functions vs. an NP.
