Wasn't accepted to the RN program at LBCC, now what?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello all!

I am new here but have been scouring the site for about a year now. I also just applied to the RN program at LBCC but found out that I was not accepted today. My friend was accepted and said he got a letter today, I did not. So I went to the nursing office and asked the lady at the front and she confirmed that I was in fact not selected. I also asked if she knew why or if they would let us know why and she said no. I feel very let down, disappointed in myself, and just generally bummed out. My counselor had told me that I had a pretty good shot at getting in but I guess that wasn't the case. Perhaps someone can shed a little light on my problem?

I have the following grades:

Anatomy: A

Physiology: A

Microbiology: B

English: B

Sociology: A

Speech: C

Psychology: in progress, likely an A

All proficiencies have already been met.

I also just received my Bachelors, however, my GPA from CSULB and LBCC combined is only 2.43 due to some unfortunate events a couple of years ago having to due with me not dropping a lot of classes. (Which I think may have affected my eligibility) Now I'm regretting that I turned in my CSULB transcripts since my LBCC GPA alone was 2.83. I'm wondering if that had a lot of weight on their decision or if I'm just beating myself up. And now I'm freaked out because I know they are increasing the minimum cumulative GPA to 2.5 for the next semester, which I do not have, and now they already have my CSULB transcripts!

I am so sad that I didn't get in and I would really like to know how far off I was to getting in, why I didn't get in, and what I could do to improve my chances for next semester. I was also wondering if I should try to talk to the department head to find out where I went wrong and if she could suggest anything or if I should just keep applying.

With all that said, I'm beginning to wonder if I will even ever get in due to my poor cumulative GPA. They also mentioned something about alternates? How does this work and does it really exist at LBCC? How do I know if I'm an alternate? I thought I was a pretty good candidate in the first place but I guess not.

If anyone has faced a similar plight and still managed to get in with a low GPA, how long did it take? I'm 30 years old and trying to make a career change and I have been completely overwhelmed by this rejection. I have also applied at Cerritos and will apply at all of the other local schools for the spring.

All of my friends that are nurses have been telling me that I'll get in but I just feel very discouraged.

So I guess I'm really wondering if you guys think I still have a good chance for next semester or if I should go the LVN route.

Any insight, advice, or encouragement would be greatly appreciated.

I'm so sorry you didnt get in!! I also go to LBCC!...I love that school....

Of course I don't think anyone here can just read your post and be able to answer your personal question about why you didnt get selected. There's so many factors being held,, I honestly just don't know. We can point the finger and try and guess and make assumptions all day, but how do we really know?

What I would do is...have a backup plan, which you seem to already.

You said you applied at Cerritos...ok..well they'll let you know within about 4-6weeks right? Also you have your undergrad? Have you thought about going to Cal state?

Goldenwest and Cypress aren't accepting apps until Sept-Oct..so maybe take classes until then, god forbid, Cerritos doesn't work out. LIke I'm taking pharmacology now to prepare.

I did get accepted, however, I prepared myself for all the above. It's not the end of the world, and this will not paving the way to what kind amazing nurse you will become.

Take classes to boost up that cummulative GPA, especially since theyre boosting it to 2.5.

And deffinitely apply to LBCC again! I know people that did not get selected, but last minute, people failed the TEAS, and they called the "waitlisted" people and they had to rush immiediately! So you never know! Always be prepared!

Good luck and don't be discouraged...keep your game face on and head up and keep doing what you're doing!

All the best to you!

-Samantha

Im sorry you didnt make it. Since I dont know what the criteria is for your school I cant give you any advice.

Im going to try for the LPN and then bridge later if I have can afford to. Mabye that is a good alternitive for you.

I'm a current RN student at LBCC. Students generally do not get in the first try if there are a few discrepancies, even though, you did fairly well in ANAT, PHYSIO, and MICRO.

First off, any C's on your transcript with make or break your chances of getting in. That said, you have a C for speech. Speech is a requirement for the RN program. Secondly, anything less than a 2.5 will not even be seen by Dr. Harrell. Actually, it is but it just looks bad.

My suggestion is keep reapplying early but I don't think you have to turn in your transcript from CSULB unless thats where all of your GE's are...

I've talked to previous students that got in with less than a 3.0 before. It's based on luck, really. However, there are other great schools out there besides LBCC. My friends at Golden West all agreed that their RN program is more organized and structured.

I don't suggest doing the LVN program. If you want to become an RN, then stick with it. I know you'll be a wonderful nurse.

Sorry you're disappointed, but if your cumulative GPA is less than the minimum required for admission (in this case, a 2.5 GPA), then you're not eligible for that particular program. I believe Cypress college still accepts with a 2.0 cuml GPA.

You MUST turn in your CSULB and any other transcripts to the colleges you are applying for admission. Yes, without those transcripts you feel you would be eligible - but if your hiding academic records this is academic dishonesty and could cause you to be removed from the program (since technically you weren't eligible). Yes, schools can (and often do) find out about hidden records.

Expand your options beyond just one school. RN programs in the area are highly competitive and you need to be flexible and go where you can get admitted - which isn't always your first choice.

Good luck to you.

don't feel bad, i was on the alternate list at lbcc for spring 2010. Everyone told me that "if you're on the alternate list, you will get in the next time." well guess what, i wasn't accepted again. I'm so stress about getting looked over twice!

hey theloneran6er,

goldenwest college requires a minimum of 2.0 gpa, and they combine that with your grades from english, anat, physio, and micro to come up with a 'probability' score (probability of success in the program). then there is a cutoff score based on minimum requirements (not sure what that cutoff score is in numbers) if you meet the cutoff score then you are placed in a lottery of qualified applicants. i got in on my first try! with a lottery system---that's mostly luck of course. i think goldenwest is a good option for you, but you'll have to wait til next october to apply for the following year unfortunately...just keep it in mind, and keep your chin up! i'm 28 and restarting my education/career too, so until i recently got my gwc acceptance letter, i had been a bundle of nerves wondering if i was going to get into any school! just apply, apply, apply, and get some classes you may need for later (like pharmacology, etc) out of the way and try to boost your overall/combined gpa.

I plan to apply to the lbcc program spring 2011..but i still need one science with is physiology which i will take it the fall..when you apply cant you have one classs in progress or do you have to be done with everything??

I'm sorry you did not get in, but don't give up if being a nurse is something your truly passionate about. Not sure if this will make you feel any better, but according to OCNE's statistics last year.... approximately 5,000 people that applied last year qualified for a nursing program, however due to a shortage of nursing instructors, clinical sites, and funds their was no available spots to place these people.

After reviewing your post... I would suggest you try to gain more experience (related to nursing) or voluntary work this will help you with the essay portion next year and discretionary points as well. Most nursing schools look at your preq. GPA more than your culm. GPA, however you might want to reconsider taking microbiology over or speech to improve your chances, because when it comes down to a tie breaker they look at your science courses and the time you turned in your application.

And also since, you have your bachelors degree you might want to look into George Fox University nursing program located in Newberg... their application opens up in May for Spring 2011 cohort... not sure about the date you should double check. However, you have to take the TEAS entrance exam for part of their application process though.

i kno how you feel (kinda, i havent applied yet)

i have my AS in science and a cumulative GPA of 3.0; but im @ a university taking engineering classes ( i changed my major from nursing to engineering because my job, but then i lost that job and now i am going back to nursing which i LOVE)

but my GPA is dimishing (engineering is HARD) because of the classes i am taking now, but which have nothing to do with the pre-reqs to nursing school.

now i am worried that i will not do well this quarter and ruin my GPA for good. (actually sadly, i KNOW i am not going to do well) :crying2:

this summer and fall i will be going back to a JC to finish up the big 3 sceince pre-reqs to NS. i am real good at biology and ive taken anatomy before so it shouldn't be hard to pass with an A. and I plan on applying to NS this next spring to get in in fall 2011.

but ive decided that i want to get into NS so bad, i am applying to ALL NS's in a 60 mile radius. I also live in so cal (san gabriel valley) so i suggest you up-your chances like me and apply to everything close to you.

good luck

They usually give priority to those that have finished ALL of their pre-requisites. Perhaps since you have not yet finished psychology they did not pick you.

yes in all of the ADN programs i have seen, (here in los angeles area) they do not want you to apply until ALL pre-reqs are done. because they only accept you based on those pre-reqs first.

i wish they accepted on a "course in progress" status but they don't or i would be in this next spring. :crying2:
