I am a UT Houston hopeful applying for the traditional and accelerated nursing program. I will complete my science prereqs (A&P 1/2) in the summer. I will finish up with Micro and Chem in the fall. I am so focused right now. Anyone else out there? :)

Hello!

UT-Houston is one of the schools I'm applying to as well. My first choice is the accelerated program for summer 2011. I'm currently taking Micro, A & P I and Intro to Psych. I'm going to take A & P II, Chem, Nutrition and Psych through the Lifespan this summer.

I'm actually nervous about taking the HESI. I haven't yet registered for a test date, since I'm hoping they'll open up some later dates past June.

I am nervous about the HESI too. I have studied for it in sections. I will take it in a couple of weeks.

Super nervous about the HESI test too... I'm going to order the Evolve study guide for the math, grammar etc. portions of the test, but I've read in previous threads that the Evolve guide isn't that helpful for studying for the A&P. What has everyone been using to study for the A&P?

Also, do you think we could get this thread moved over to the TX Nursing Schools forum? Seems like it'd be easier to find for others!

Sure, we can move this over to the nursing school forum. As for the the A&P question, I am using Barron's Anatomy and Physiology: The Easy Way. I believe the Evolve A&P section is an outline. Hi everyone I'm also applying for the spring!!I take the HESI tomorrow; hope I do well it was expensive!! I'm taking chem this summer, but other than that i'm done with pre reqs. I plan to start an ADN program for fall... Does anyone know if they would accept transfer nursing courses? I know that TWU and UTMB do... Good luck to all during the stressful waiting

Hi all! I'm also applying for the spring '11 round. I've signed up to take the HESI in the beginning of next month. It seems like many of you are nervous about the A&P portions, but for me personally I'm more worried about the critical thinking part since I just finished both I & II.... have any of you heard anything about it?

And just a general question about the format of HESI: are we allowed to use scratch paper and a calculator? Thanks in advance! =)

I just took it last month and they did give us scratch paper and there was a basic calculator on the computer screen. The critical thinking was hard to study for because it's critical thinking. I would say don't stress too much about it. I felt like the HESI was much easier than the TEAS or the NET

Omg, kitcait, thanks so much for replying! I've been trying to find out from both elsevier & UT if we can use a calculator & scratch paper, but I haven't been able to get ahold of anyone who knew. I know it's different for each school, so that's a big relief! Imagine trying to convert all those improper fractions in your head! :rolleyes: Was the calculator avail. for every math page, or just on certain portions?

It's definitely good to hear that the HESI is easier than the other 2 tests. Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of study guides out there for the HESI specifically, so I've been using ones for the NET & TEAS also.

And I'm stressing out about the critical thinking portion b/c I heard it was mainly on triage... As if I know what's supposed to come first when I haven't even taken any nursing courses yet!!

The calculator was available on EVERY page including the reading sections lol. There were several subsections to the critical thinking such as moral issues...etc. I did much better on the moral issues than the triage type questions. That was a little difficult. I scored an 89 overall I haven't been able to find out if this is good or not... Passing is 75 but that doesn't tell me much

Ah, that's good to know. Congrats on your high score, kitcait! I'm sure it'll be high enough. It just sucks that this is the first time UT is administering the HESI... It's like we're the new guinea pigs since they won't have a baseline to compare our scores with...

I wanted to ask if you felt like you had enough time to complete all the required sections. I researched the "recommended" times for each of the sections. But when I added them all up, the total time was 4 hrs 15 min. NOT including the critical thinking portion. And Prometric only gives us 4 hrs to complete the test!! Also, were the individual sections of the exam timed, or just the test as a whole?

You have 4 hours total for all the sections. I finished in about 2.5 So there was more than enough time for me. I usually am a fast test taker though....
