Muscle action, origin and insertion question

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I am studying for my last lab test next Thurs and have to know the action, origin and insertion for 35 muscles.....my "wonderful" prof doesn't tell us how he will ask things and I am wondering which is the best way for me to study these things. I am trying to figure out how he might ask.....to me it only makes sense in many cases that you need both, the insertion and origin to determine the name of the muscle.....maybe you guys have some tips and how did your instructors design this particular test.....

It's driving me crazy and I am running around like a headless chicken not knowing if I am on the right track :uhoh3:

Thanks in advance for your suggestions :)

I studied from my quiz I made. LOL

http://www.nursingjourney.com/origin_insertions_actions_Quiz.html

Other than that, I pointed to a muscle on myself, named it, said where it originated, where it inserted, and what the action was. I just went from muscle to muscle and made sure I knew all of the muscles we were suppose to learn. (We didn't have to know the action/origin/insertion on all the muscles that we had to identify. So we lucked out.)

GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!! :)

That's the way I have done it so far...should be good enough and if not and I don't do well, I can drop one test. The lowest score, either lab or lecture....

Thank you so very much for your support

Sorry, I was having flashbacks . . . . . . .. . :uhoh3:

Seriously, wish I'd had this bb and all the great assets here when I was taking anatomy.

Good luck!!

my lab practical was similar, and all i did was make up the 40 or so note cards - on the front of each card was the name of the muscle and a picture; the back had the origin, insertion, and action of each muscle. basically, i made my husband do those flash cards with me every night until the test. i think he would have probably scored higher than i did!

also, one of the things my professor was big on was which muscles were "prime movers", as well as their synergists and antagonists. (personally, my professor was my antagonist, but we won't go there...) for example, the diaphragm is the prime mover of inspiration, its synergist muscles (musc. that aid) are the external intercostals, and an antagonist would be the internal obliques. a lot of our questions were related not only to origin, insertion, and action, but to synergist/antagonist/prime mover questions as well.

i hope this doesn't complicate your life! hopefully it will give you a better idea of how to be prepared... good luck!

that's how i have been studying...flashcards and engaging the husband..., one way to connect and deepen our friendship :chuckle omg you also had to know synergist, antagonist etc......

lol about your teacher being the antagonist, my teacher is very diffiult also and i've had a headache since the beginning of the semester.

thanks for your advice.

Where do you folks find these good web sites???? Would love to know!

ah, the glory days of a & p i... i'm remembering some more of my lab practical experience from that class, so here it goes:

more antagonist professor memories: she never did ask us some of the most obvious questions, like which muscle is the prime mover of inspiration (the diaphragm, which nearly everyone knew). often times, she would have a plastic torso dude on the table at a particular station with an arrow pointing to, say, infraspinatus, and the question would go something like this:

what is the action of this muscle?

name a muscle which acts as a synergist to this muscle.

which, i'm sorry to say, i can't remember the answer to at this moment - i'm too busy trying to learn the stages of embryonic development. :uhoh3:

anyway, after the lab practical, you generally craved a stiff drink, but mostly, anyone who really exerted effort throughout the semester left the class with at least a b-, and the lab practicals were graded with a lot of forgiveness (a good thing, or she would have had a class full of flunkies).

i have never consumed more alcohol in my entire life ( i am 46) than since the start of this class. my jaegermeister bottle is almost empty, just enough left t'ill next tuesday (day of the final) i know that there is a question about problems with alcohol abuse on the application to nursing school...."in the last five years have you had a problem with alcohol....." anyone will end up with an alcohol problem or worse if they take his class. :crying2:

no forgiveness on his tests.....full of bozo trick questions and on his lecture tests he habitually adds stuff not covered in class or in the chapters. can you believe that i have my fourth lecture test on the same day that i have my final with this guy????? 50 questions about the nervous system, 7 chapters wide and he only gave us 1 1/2 lectures on it?????? he is so crazy, i walk around like a headless chicken. two students left in this class, me and another guy, he is holding a b. 26 people quit!!!!! i am holding an a, doubt that i can maintain it with all the upcoming craziness. keep your fingers crossed for me on thurs that i get a decent grade on this lab test. they could pay me money and i wouldn't take this guy for a&p 2.....i'll take his 'roomate' who he shares his office with ( good teacher who i should have taken if i had known what i get into with this one).....sweet revenge next fall :p

What's that saying?????

"I don't have an alcohol problem. I get drunk, I fall down......no problem." :chuckle

Hey, as long as you drink responsibly, not continuously, and you don't make it a "have to have" habit, then you'll be ok.

Try to go the whole next class without it. lol
