Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi everyone,

So I want to do an accelerated bsn route as I already have a b.a. I still need to take anatomy, physiology, micro and 1 or 2 more classes depending on the universities criteria for the pre-nursing core. I live in San Diego,CA and would prefer to stay here but would go to UCLA if god willing I was accepted.

Anyways. I have heard that for-profit schools are known for being messy and held in a lesser regard compared to CSU schools. I'm trying to figure out if it would be better to finish the nursing precore which would take about a year if I can attend summer school, and then continue to nursing school for 15 months to become an RN OR if there are any for profit or private nursing schools that accept on a rolling admission that DO have a good reputation and good job placement...? Anyone know of anything? I'm 26 so I would like to get started sooner than later BUT I do realize that it may be worth the wait for a public nursing school.

Thoughts ?

Please do not lump Private & For-Profit (commercial, investor-owned) schools into the same category. In education, the term "private" simply indicates that the school is not tax supported - but it is a traditional school entirely focused on the mission of education (not profit). There are many, many very well regarded private colleges and universities with great nursing programs.

Commercial, For Profit, Investor-owned programs exist for one reason only.... to generate a profit for investors, whether they are share holders or sole owners. Their primary goal is to enroll as many tuition-paying students as possible. They are likely to spend more money on snazzy and compelling advertising campaigns than on faculty salaries. They usually offer very convenient one-stop shopping for prospective students... with "helpful" admissions staff that can expedite financial assistance (loans) for prospective students who are too grateful/thrilled to carefully analyze everything that's going on.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. So back to my original question... Which of these private schools or for profit schools, that offer accelerated bsn, are highly regarded in the San Diego area? So far I have found mt. Saint Mary's in Los Angeles, but again, it is hard to know which schools have great reputations without being on the other side as a hiring manager.

Do your prerequisites at a community college and you will save thousands. It seems like you need a few so i would go that route. If the CC has an adn program, i would apply there along with a absn orbsn program. Good luck...keep ur gpa up too.
