Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I heard a from someone that nursing schools that don't require pre-requites exist is this true or false? And if they do exist are these schools just scamming to make money .

By the way I am not planning to go to one of these schools I intend to take all my pre reqs . I'm just curious about this .

Found this when I did a google search:

Nursing Schools Without Prerequisites | GeriatricNursing.org

Recommend thoroughly checking out every source, to see if goals match yours (what will you have when you are done, and how much will it cost)?

Thank you dianah

Some for-profit programs incorporate the prereqs into the program. However, they will cost you quite a bit more. I ended up signing up for an LPN program that was a bit more expensive because of this, but it made sense for me after I analyzed the cost of the program versus the income I'd be missing out on by waiting 12 or more months for the less expensive program. But, I'm in my late 30s and am in a different situation with different priorities than younger students, so you may be better off going the more traditional route.

LVN/LPN programs may require fewer or no pre-reqs other than a high school diploma, as they're considered vocational programs in most areas.

However, I would be wary of any ADN or BSN program claiming that you need absolutely no pre-reqs to enroll. You may not need them to apply, but the odds are you that you'll end up taking those pre-reqs as part of the nursing program. In addition, schools with more lenient admission guidelines tend to make up for it with higher tuition rates.

Also, you want to make sure the program is accredited by either NLNAC or CCNE/ACEN in addition being approved by your state BON. No point spending tons of money to go to a school to find out that the nursing program doesn't meet BON requirements for licensure, or that employers won't hire you because your program lacks accreditation.

I believe 4-year nursing programs do not require prereqs other than a HS diploma. They do want you to be fresh out of high school usually but require you have taken Chemistry, Biology, certain maths, and decent SAT scores while in high school. It really depends on the school!

What is the basis for this statement? Second career, second degree, non "traditional" students proliferate in nursing programs, even BSN programs.
