Pre-nursing student Disability Advice From Current nursing students and Nurses

Published

Question is what do you think my chances are of becoming a nurse if i lost eyesight in one of my eyes? How have you seen students with disabilities being treated? Should I stop now and do radiography or telemetry...bachelor's in health Science maybe?

No major depth perception issues and i draw blood daily were i have worked now for over a decade.

I am a Pre-nursing student, and I have been certified plebotomist for 11years. I was diagnosed with cancer last year and had pituitary tumor removed. Problem is I lost vision permanently in an eye during surgery. I say all that to ask..... What advice, experience, observactions, etc.. can you give me if I want to know if I would be told that i cant be a nurse, without being given a chance to succeed. I already know about accommodations in school and I don't need them if anyone's thinking that.

Thanks guys.

I can't say for sure how your vision loss in one eye will affect you but I can say that I worked with a student, who becam an RN with a below the elbow amputation of one arm. Didn't slow her down one bit!

Specializes in NICU, ICU, PICU, Academia.

I don't see it a as problem as long as the vision in your remaining eye is good or correctable to 20/20-ish.
