Pre-Nursing Reqs Headache

Published

Hi, fellow pre-nursing students!

I have just started my pre-reqs and I am already in not so great state of mind. Among the pre-reqs I have to take a genetics class. Oh boy, how hard it is! But I would say it is mostly due to the ineffective teaching and all the unnecessary information I am asked to memorize. In any event, knowing that high GPA is essential for getting into the nursing program, and realizing how hard this genetics class is, I do not want to think of getting anything less than an A. But at the same time, some terrible thoughts do creep into my head once in a while.

Those of you who have taken their pre-reqs, and did not get a high GPA, what was your experience of getting into a nursing program? Did you still get in? How?

I would very much appreciate your insights!

I'm in the same predicament as you right now. I am trying to apply for a nursing program that accepts 96/1,000 applicants. So ever since I started my pre-req classes I feel like I am alway on edge. However, what I will say is that I have found myself freaking out a lot, and it all ended up to be nothing. I do feel like the stress help me keep motivated, and focused, but never ever let it consume you.

My advice to you is you keep those thoughts out your head, and stay focused on getting an A in this genetics class. Unfortunately we do get bad teachers sometimes, it's just how the system works. But try changing your study habits and techniques, and neve lose sight of your goals.

A sad reality about nursing programs, is that the higher your GPA is, the better. A high GPA will never hurt your application. But if you have to take a B, then you that's okay too. Just make sure everything else are As! Best of luck to you.

Aim high never low... you just started your pre reqs. Keep that GOAL for that A. Good pre reqs grades can really make or break you... Do whatever you have to do! Extra hours for studying, studying groups, youtube, whatever you need. And just to throw it out there, nothing is unnecessary info it will all tie together somehow in other classes.. Program yourself from now! good luck!

Genetics as a prerequisite for nursing school? Uhh...

I know, right! It is hard to get into NP as is, this particular school makes it even harder!

While I am very relieved to have made it into the nursing program, I do wish I'd have done better on some pre reqs. I had to retake A&P and I had a C in Chem 1. My first year wasn't my best but I pulled through and even though I don't have the highest GPA, it was still good enough to make it! Your school could be different so just make sure to check the requirements.

Just stay on track and don't lose sight of where you are. It's okay to make mistakes, it leaves room for improvement! Make a goal and stick to it! I wish I had that same mindset earlier, but I have a new goal to do even better than before (especially now in the program). Good luck! :)

What program are you taking that requires a genetics class for an entry level program?

Intro to Genetics is a pre-req for the ABSN at Hunter College, NYC. Obviously, this program, which is very, very competitive, is out of the question now. However, I have a few other schools I am considering. I have just received my fall grades and I am on the top of the world. I know I can make it!
