Pre-ABSN student - what to do before?

Hi!

I am currently a rising junior at the University of Florida. Late in the game - I decided I wanted to be a nurse and therefore couldn't apply for Traditional BSN program. Now, I am set on a ABSN program.

The issue is most of the programs start in the summer. I am scheduled to graduate in Summer 2018, meaning I have an academic year with no set plans.

My question is: what do you think would look more impressive to ABSN programs?

  • I could extend my graduation date and pick up a second major (my current one is Health Education & Behavior, I'd add on Family, Youth & Community Sciences).
  • I could graduate in Summer 2018 and volunteer/work as a CNA in one of my local clinics to gain more experience - I am trying to pick up a Support Tech job but those are so competitive

Sorry this was so long, thanks! :)

I am taking Microbio this summer then they will all be completed!

I'd go with working as a CNA. No sense in spending more on the course work for a second major which won't add much to your career in the long run. CNA job will get you some exposure to the work environment, allow you to network, and provide a little money in your pocket.

My own experience is that working as a CNA strengthened my application to nursing school, and having already had exposure to the healthcare environment has made clinicals less stressful for me than for many of my classmates who did not have exposure to the hospital environment before nursing school.
