I inadvertently let my RN license expire in Iowa. I thought that I had until 2016 to renew and it was actually 2015- I continued to practice until I looked at my license and realized it was expired. I am currently waiting for the board to reactivate it but I am wondering if anyone has gone through this before and what I can expect in terms of discipline from the IBON.
Thanks

No, but I've had a lot of nightmares where I was working and suddenly realized my license was expired. I'd wake up so relieved!
This has never happened to me because my facility has always been on top of it. ONCE and only once, I didn't realize I was coming up for renewal. My facility's compliance nurse approached me about it about a week prior. It was too late, and I had to be taken off the schedule until my license was in good standing. No facility I've worked at has not addressed this in advance. I can't imagine this slipping through the cracks for a whole year. Wow.

You were lucky your facility is on top of that. It is incumbent upon EVERY nurse to know when her/his license renewal is due. It's no one else's responsibility but ours.
OP, how long were you working on your expired license? Penalties may include fines and reprimands from the BON. I hope for your sake that it was only a couple of days. Sometimes fines are decided based on the length of time one works on an inactive license. Wishing you the best of luck.

I agree that we all need to take responsibility for this. However, if a negative outcome happened and a nurse was working on an expired license, don't think for a moment that the facility wouldn't share legal and financial responsibility for this! That's why most facilities have someone monitoring this at all times.
