potential student

U.S.A. Michigan

Hi, I am not a nurse or a nursing school student but would like to be. I am interested in attending wcccd and was wondering if anyone has tips/advice for me? I was looking at the pre reqs online and also spoke w an advisor but neither was clear on whether there were gen ed requirements to be fulfilled in addition to the pre reqs to apply to the program. I am 36, have 2 kids and currently work full time and was looking for some much needed guidance. If anyone is able to help it will be much appreciated! Thanks!!!

Good point, Anne36. I had an advisor chuckle when I mentioned nursing and he said that 500 students a year say they want to get into the program! That was a little intimidating for sure! I hadn't thought of that angle.

you know they do offer science classes online at WCCCD

Yes I'm aware but I sometimes have a tough time with science. Need to be in the classroom

Indeed they do, but insofar as I know, you'd still need to visit a campus for the labs anyway. For a class like Microbiology, where you have lab twice a week, it's almost pointless to take it online. :lol2:

jazznjac- no I have not been to the nursing seminar yet, here's a goofy question: do I do that before or after I apply? Common sense says after I apply, but hey I could be wrong. Here's another question: classes start monday so would it be less busy if I waited a few weeks to apply and take the COMPASS? I know I could call WCCC and ask them myself but you guys all seem to be more on the ball :) So glad I found this site!

It would be less busy if u waited but if u decided to take classes u would already be behind for this semester with the material. As far as the nursing session it would be best to go after u have applied to the school. At the sessions they give u all the info u would need to get your pre req's done in a timely fashion and what to expect so be sure to do that as soon as possible!

You can go before you apply (I did)! But make sure you still 'sign in' so that when you do apply to the school, they can mark you down as having attended--so you don't have to sit through it twice. I just had to call once I had a student number and remind them that I was there.

Ok, good. I'm going to hold off on taking a class until summer that way I have ample time to apply, go to a nursing meeting and take the compass. I basically had this "go back to school" epiphany somewhere between christmas and new years and after I went to talk to the advisor and sat and waited with the rest of the last minute folks (and a two yr old), I realized that it wasn't something I could do "real quick". When I asked somone about taking the COMPASS, she informed me that I could take it right then. I looked down at the crabby toddler in the stroller and said "ummm...how about not?". So, I'll get my poop in a group and follow all of the advice I have been given! I know somewhere on this site somebody posted info about the upcoming dates of the meeting.

Here's what else I have been wondering:since there is no waiting list, they would just accept the 200 (or however many the program holds) with the best grades, right? Ans those that didn't get in have to try again in the fall/spring? I know in wccc's hyg program they only accept 20 or 25 students per year due to space in the clinic. I have 2 co workers that have been through that program. So logically I would think there is a better chance of being accepted into the nursing program, right? Although it seems that every one I have spoken to lately wants to go to nursing school - several of which are men. Is it true that something like 500 students apply? That is sheer insanity! And what is this I have heard about some schools having a 2-3 yr wait? What exactly are you supposed to do while you're waiting? Take more classes? Rot on the vine?

I too attend WC3 and am trying to apply to the nursing program. I have taken all of my co req's and I am doing my A&P right now. I was a procrastinator because I am scared of science classes!:) I have always been good with my grades but science takes a lot out of me! I will hopefully be able to apply to the nursing program in September 2010 to get in for spring of 2011. Not sure of what campus you will be going to but I know of a teacher that is excellent for science. She is at the downtown campus and her name is Mrs. Byrd. She was really tough but she taught you EVRYTHING you needed to know plus some. Her classes fill up quick so you may not be able to get in any this semester but be on the lookout for her if thats the campus you choose.

I have also taken some online classes and personally I LOVE them! Not only do you know your grade every step of the way because they post the grades within 2 to 3 days of turning in the assignment but in a way you are doing everything on your time. I have a daughter, husband, and a full time job so its really hard for me to be away from home in the evenings for class. if I would have discovered online classes before last semester I def would have done more. Now that I am down to the science classes I have no choice but to go to class :sniff: Hope this helps you some and good luck!!

I am def going to take classes that way as much as possible because once I let my office know what I am up to they will find my replacement. So I have to be sneaky. lol Has anybody heard anything about wc3 adding pre reqs? Am I just making that up? Would be my luck that when I finally decide to go for it they add a bunch more pre reqs. sigh....

And I have another question....do you have to complete all pre and co reqs before applying to program at wc3 and when do you take the net? I have asked so many questions and read so many different responses that I have totally confused myself! This is what I get for reading so many posts! I've said it before, but thanks again to all who take the time to answer my endless stream of questions. It really is helpful!

You have to complete all pre-reqs before applying, but you don't have to do the co-reqs until you're in the program. However, it'd behove you in a big way to get them out of the way before the program. You have to take the TEAS (they no longer offer the NET) before applying as well. :)

And...another day, another question: I was laying in bed last night trying to figure out how I was going to pay for all of this when I realized that I had not factored the cost of books into the equation! Can anyone give me a guesstimate on how much books would cost for a class? Just one class - bio or eng or something. It would not be good if I registered then didn't have the money for the book! As usual, all responses welcomed and appreciated!
