Hi. I am graduating this December with my ADN. I have been offered Post-partum at one hospital and med-surge at another. I am wanting to work in labor and delivery eventually to help me get experience to become a certified nurse-midwife. I am having a hard time deciding because all of my clinical instructors have said that it is good to get that first year of med-surge experience. Any advise on whether I should get that med surge experience or not?

If you know you want to work in L&D and your ultimate goal is to become a CNM, then I strongly recommend taking the Mom-Baby job.

I worked PP as a new grad, and it's how I got to L&D. :)

Get into L&D if possible and ask if you are able to cross-train or move to PP if L&D isn't for you. It does happen sometimes that you don't like the "dream" unit. Also, I ONLY worked PP for years and when I had to move to another city, I couldn't find an opening to save my life. I currently don't work in any OB position because L&D requires experience so I am unable to get back in. Working PP I would think you might have a way in if your manager and L&D manager both agree you are worth cross-training. Also, consider NICU.
They told me that I can cross-train into NICU if that's what I want to do. Hoping to cross-train into L&D since it's a smaller unit
