Poster ideas for the NICU?

Hey, y'all, I have to pick your brains for a minute. I'm trying to find, or more likely, actually design some posters to laminate or frame and put up in the two nurseries on relevant topics. I'd appreciate it if you guys had any ideas you'd like to share...come up with a slogan, a visual idea, whatever. If I have to take the digital camera out and take the photos myself, design my own poster, and have it printed I will. That seems likely considering that no one has anything like this already made! I've been searching for hours. I was thinking of promoting things like breastfeeding, kangaroo care, maybe something on SIDS since it's so prevalent with preemies, Shaken baby syndrome, etc. Any ideas? Anyone? Anyone? Beuler? Beuler? ________ economics? Just kidding. It's a disease, really. It gets stuck in my head and it has to come out. ;>)

Thanks!

Kristi

I think you're right on with the Kangaroo care and BFing. How about car seats? You know, positioning your preemie in the seat? Installing it?

Something to reinforce back to sleep, we prone the babies so much the parents might follow our habit. CPR. Handwashing in preventing colds, flu, RSV. These ideas are most relevent for after D/C.

For in the hospital, maybe something for helping parents to understand A's and B's. We actually have written info for parents but maybe a pretty posterboard might be nice. Kangaroo care and BFing are good ones too.

A's and B's!! Great idea. I hadn't thought of that. I have found, thanks to people on here, some nice breastfeeding posters, but I think I'm moving towards just designing some. I'm pretty good with graphic design, and I figure they can't cost *that* much to just have professionally printed (we'd only need one copy of each poster per nursery). The RSV is a good idea, also, as well as the car seat idea. Okay, let's see. Breastfeeding. Kangaroo care. A's and B's and/or basic equipment in the nursery? Handwashing. For post d/c, we've got car seats and RSV prevention. Shaken baby syndrome. CPR. Sounds good to me! Now I just need to get to working on 'em. ;>) I'd do it now if I weren't so sweepy. *yawn*

We have four SBS awareness posters available as .pdf files for free downloading on our website:

Let us know what you think about them. We hope to have them available in Spanish shortly..

PS. New York is one of seven states that now requires hospitals to offer new parents the opportunity to watch an educational video about SBS. At Vassar Brothers, they incorporated the video into the NICU education program for parents, who were already watching a video on Infant CPR.

They also use the awareness posters in the NICU, general delivery area and Peds/ER waiting areas.

If you need info about the education program, see the article by Dias et al in the April 2005 Pediatrics.

PPS. The NY SIDS Center has a very nice SIDS awareness poster available, and the CJ Foundation for SIDS in NJ offers posters in English/Spanish.

NICU_Nurse, if you're seriously interested in doing a poster on car seats, I can help you out with some great websites. We redid our parent teaching notebook on car seats a couple of months ago and I learned SOOO MUCH. It was one of those things I took for granted all these years since I gravitate toward the itty bitties.

Interesting factoid: in traffic stop studies, 4 out of 5 parents had the car seat installed incorrectly.

WOW!! After all the hard work we do getting them to the point of discharge, if we don't teach them, who will??
