:confused:Can anyone help with this problem? Post turp patient catheter wont drain into foley bag but will drain into the leg bag what could be causing this? It has been irrigated, bag changed, will drain without bag or into leg bag. At a loss any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Assuming that the reinserted catheter is where it is actually supposed to be...
Spastic bladder (common),
Hypervolemia doing it's usual thing, kidneys self adjust and slow way down to protect themselves... (common)(patient absorbed a lot of fluids from flushing to keep the field clear during operation),
Post TURP syndrome (10%)(how are patient's serum sodium levels? vision? A&O ??)

I am only suggesting this because believe it or not I found this once when trying to figure out why catheter would not drain! Did the person who added the bedside drainage bag remember to remove the protective cap from the end of the tube? Sometimes the truth is stranger than anything you could make up LOL!

YUP this one. I started flipping out one night because a guy who had such strictures and BPH that it took a urologist to cath him wasn't draining any urine and I thought the Foley was clogged. I got an irrigation kit expecting it to be clogged and thus rendered useless which would necessitate removal of the Foley, but something made me check to see if maybe somebody forgot to uncap the drainage bag first when putting him to bed.. and WALLAH- that was it I was SO happy.

All great ideas, but given that the Foley is draining freely into the leg bag, I doubt any systemic problems.
I'm thinking defective bag or as mentioned, a cap in place.

Agreed. I don't do a whole lot of TURPs but it seems to me if one of the "out" ports is running, the others should be as well (at least sluggishly.)
"Hypervolemia doing it's usual thing"
Actually, hypovolemia....:)
Weird kind of tired night last night... was having visions of misbehaving plumbing à la The Three Stooges - "A Plumbing We Will Go."
You know, every convoluted thing that can go wrong...
Nice catch Roser13. I was quickly pruning several branches of thought from the middle to shorten my hurried list, while I was changing my mind. (dilutional hyponatremia/ hypervolemia from absorption of excess fluid from surgery and a whole lot of other thoughts were on my pre-edit list) weird how that happened... stretching out in too many directions at once I suppose...

So the cap was the culprit?
