Post Interview Wait... When will that call back come?!

Published

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum. I am a new grad and I just passed the NLCEX in CA in October. I recently interviewed at a hospital and I thought it went great. The interviewers kept smiling and saying "this is great", blah blah blah. So I left pretty confident.

The HR rep that was sitting in at my interview said that "I will get back to you early next week". My interview was last Wednesday, December 5. It is now the following Thursday. I sent them thank you notes the following day after my interview, and called both my interviewers yesterday to follow up on the process, but they didn't answer so I left a voicemail. They have not called me back

My question is, do I still have a chance? It has been 8 days... Surely I thought that if they were going to offer me the job I would get called by Tuesday, but now I feel that my chances are slimming with each passing day. I know that they interviewed a few other people, and there were two departments that they were looking to fill.

Does anyone have any idea when I should receive a phone call or if I even have a chance at the job still? Any insight will help...

Specializes in Psych ICU, addictions.

I'm not the person who interviewed you nor the company you're applying to, so I can't tell you for sure if/when that call will come. Keep in mind that December is a busy time for employers, between all of the nursing students who just graduated and are looking for jobs, and the holidays. So all I can say is you just have to keep waiting and see what happens.

In the meantime, keep on applying to other positions. No matter how promising an interview is, only stop the job hunt AFTER you've accepted an official job offer.

Best of luck.

I am in the same position.

I had an interview this Tuesday, but it has only been 3 days.

They let me know that they will be notifying me next week, so it is a waiting game.

It's nerve wrecking definitely. I have done the same as you, sent a Thank you letter with very high hopes.

My suggestion is to just wait. They maybe still interviewing, and finalizing things so one day passed the date they told you they would reach you, is okay. Keep applying to other places, and keep hoping for the best.

I'm praying that after this last interview , this hospital is the one for me..... If not, I know that possibly there is a better one out there for me. Just staying optimistic.

-Blessings

I am also a new grad (graduated this past spring) and had to deal with the uncertainty of waiting after an interview. I know how frustrating it is and I just want you to not lose hope because it will happen for you!

I had a total of three interviews. One I never heard back from anyone at all, the second HR actually called me to tell me I didn't get the job but it was a good two weeks later (as if I had my hopes up still) and the third interview they practically offered me the job before I even walked out the door, though they had another person to interview.

So my point is, you kind of know right away that you got it. This has been the experience of many of my fellow classmates as well. Usually you get the offer pretty quick if you are going to get an offer. I got the call with an unofficial offer within an hour of the interview and got the official offer the next day. I figured that if they think you are a good fit right away, they don't want to lose you. There are many many new grads out there but not all of them are right for each job; when it's right, it will fall into place for you.

It took me a good five months to finally get that offer. This is a bad time of year to be searching for any job. At my hospital, they are cutting way back on staff to meet productivity for the year, so not many units are hiring right now.

Just don't give up; it will happen for you. Good luck.

update: I WAS OFFERED THE POSITION! they called me two weeks later, better late than never! HR has started my background check. and will receive the official offer once i clear all of the paperwork!

Congrats on getting the job. I am also waiting to hear back from an interview that sound promising. I will continue to pray and have faith. Good luck.

Congrats!

Yep, for LPN @ nursing home, it was literally on the spot. I had a DON throwing all kinds of good offers; she needed an LPN now. Hospitals are a bit more nuanced in their approach however.

Congrats! :)

What do you say when they ask "Do you have any medical work experience?" or a similar question?

I have always been a web designer and have 0 medical work experience apart from all of the clinical sites I went to. What should I say if asked this question?

Keep cool. Always.

Nursing is leadership; in our profession, it is mandatory. The best leader is the one who can keep cool when the (blank) hits the fan. All eyes will be on you asking "so what do we do now?"

Sometimes the interview is a gut check to see if you can handle yourself.

Say "No, this will be my first. I am willing to learn everything I can. I hope your organization can assist me in becoming a better nurse."

And then go on about why you are interested in this particular field.

BAM! Done. Next question.

IF you are an RN, you are likely to have the option of many different fields, and they know this. Expressing why you are interested in this in particular helps them to see you are not just looking for 'any job.' Or planning to move on the moment something that pays more comes along.

i agree with okguy.

be honest and say that "no i do not have medical experience. HOWEVER, i have "so and so" transferable skills that i feel would lend a hand at being a successful part of your healthcare team." talk about some skills that you have that you plan to bring with you to the position. for example, if you have been a web designer, you can say that you are able to work independently and problem solve on your own because you are creative. etc etc.

sometimes hiring managers are looking for a person who not necessarily has all the experience, but someone who they can mold into a nurse on their unit. someone who can work in a team, has great interpersonal skills, can think on the spot, and can work in a fast paced environment. good luck to everyone and thank you for the support!

good luck lpnkerry! prayer really does go a long way. keep us updated
