Yale GEPN Applicants 2012

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

There didn't seem to be a main thread for applicants to Yale's GEPN program this year, so I thought I'd get one started. I'm applying for the midwifery specialty and am currently working on my application essays, having done everything else.

Is anyone else really struggling with the main essay? I've finished my apps to two other programs and was happy with how those essays came out, but Yale's essay guidelines as so restrictive that I feel like my essay is turning out all disjointed. The fact that we have to answer every aspect of every question in *exactly the order they list* (this is apparently something that you need to take very seriously) means that I'm having to tie myself in knots. I want it to be not only informative about me as an applicant but also a good piece of writing - and I feel like the essay format is making this kind of difficult.

Anyone else out there applying?

dedicatedone - we would for sure be awarded an "actual degree". After the 3-year GEPN program you have an MSN. The difference between Yale and some other accelerated programs is that Yale does not award you a BSN, just an MSN. After the prespecialty requirements are completed they award you a Certificate in Nursing so that you are eligible to take the NCLEX, but then you're supposed to just carry on through the end of the MSN program.

Ok. Because the way that the website made it sound was we only received a certificate of some kind.

Thanks LookingAhead!

Alright, I'm FINALLY getting ready to submit this application - probably tomorrow. I've been stalling because I've been traveling a lot...and because Yale's essays are a huge pain in the behind.

I feel pretty good about the main essay (the one with the zillions of questions that absolutely cannot be skipped or ignored or order changed or looked at funny on pain of immediate rejection from the program), but because of how detailed the questions are, I feel like I've said everything I have to say! And then there's the short essay...which I've basically totally addressed in the long essay, because the entire reason I want to become a nurse-midwife is based on my "community service, community leadership or working with vulnerable and underserved populations".

GAH.

I don't want to be repetitive, but I'm seriously running out of ideas. Also, I'm nervous because I don't have anyone lined up to read these essays specifically (a lot of the text is stuff I used in my other applications, which other people looked over, but some of it is obviously unique to this application).

Anyone else having these issues? The deadline is so soon...

Despite my previous griping, I've managed to just submit my application. Phew - that was my last one.

The website went all buggy right at the end, but I think everything eventually went through.

I can finally join the ranks of the applied! Good luck to everyone, and congratulations on getting through the application process thusfar!

good for you! i'm finishing up my last edits to my essay tonight and sending it in! excited with physical gittyness to go with it! what's your specialty?

Midwivery, which seems really popular/competitive. How about you? Does anyone know how many people apply and the breakdown in specialty areas?

I'm not applying anywhere else this year, so I am just elated to have the app process over with. I would be so thrilled just to get an interview. Join me in being done, simplekategirl! You can do it!

Yes, midwifery seems to be the most competitive. For this year's incoming class, they had the highest GPA and GRE scores.

The breakdown in specialty seems to differ from year to year.

Admissions departments never seem to give the breakdown for how many people apply for each specialty!

I'm applying for midwifery too, sirgalahad - I know it's either the most competitive or one of the most competitive specialties at every school I'm applying to.

Sigh. :)

Hey all, I know this doesn't directly relate but I thought I'd share anyway because it's interesting.... I passed my IBCLC boards and now am officially an IBCLC (lactation consultant). Happy doesn't begin to describe what I'm feeling.... :hrnsmlys: Good luck everyone !

Congrats Doula Kerry! That's awesome.

can anyone tell me if you can view your application before you send it? i'm ready to send it, but when i attach my attachments it just says "attached successfully" but i can't see the file name attached! i've done it a few times...and am nervous there are like 7 attachments in there! i want to see an overview of my whole application and the attachments before i send it. do we get this option before we submit it and pay and i just haven't gotten the option yet because i've never done the submit and pay step?

hoping someone can help!

thanks.
