Possible move to TN & I need help!!!

U.S.A. Tennessee

Published

Hi! I am thinking of relocating to East or middle TN. My main worry now after reading some of the previous postings on jobs is the schools for my children.

Can anyone give some ideas about what areas are good for raising families and have good school districts? Even a website that tells about local schools would be very helpful.

This is the only thing I am worried about. My kids are in a great school now. We live in Ohio & I would hate to move & get stuck with a not so great school.

Thanks for the help!

Hi!! I live in W. TN, and we have some great small towns and schools here, but I noticed you are interested in Middle or East. What towns have you considered?? I researched Nashville not to long ago, and have several websites that might help you, just let me know

If you're moving to middle TN for schools, consider Williamson County. Yes, it has the highest per capita income with many people of wealth living there, but their school system is one of the best in the country. The next choice would be Rutherford County. Their school system doesn't touch Williamson County but it's better than Davidson County which is the county seat for Nashville. If you do move to Davidson County, look for the magnet schools if you decide against a private school. The magnet schools for the most part do a fairly decent job of educating the children.

East TN I don't think has the caliber of schools that middle TN has. There are some good schools in certain suburbs outlying Chattanooga and Knoxville but I don't believe they rate as high as Williamson County. I hope you find what you're looking for.

If there are any real good ones in Chattanooga, I dont know where. I lived there for many years, and they were better then than I have heard about the present. They made lots of changes just after we left.

The above link will take you to the 2006 rankings of high schools in the country. Tennessee had eight. The best were MLK (39) and Hume-Fogg (43), both Nashville magnets. Hillsboro HS in Nashville was 504. Williamson Cty had four - Franklin (607), Fairview (903), Brentwood (234) and Ravenwood (468). There were three in East TN - Oak Ridge (465), Kingsport (1191) and Knoxville (1127). If you are curious about the academic performance of a high school call the guidance office and ask how many merit scholars they produced the year before, which will indicate how the compete nationally.

Chattanooga has some good magnet schools (CCA, CSAS, Normal Park, CSLA). A few of the neighborhood schools are good (Big Ridge, Soddy High, anything on Signal Mountain) but then, many aren't. For info about Hamilton County Schools, go to http://www.hcde.org

My dd's elementary school is ranked 21st in the state...cool!

Farragut in Knox county is a great school system & area in East TN, Roane County (Kingston) is a good system & much less expensive housing than in Farragut....

Johnson City/Kingsport area are also good areas for kids. I grew up in Greenville, but the school systems are better in Johnson City (Washington Co) and Kingsport (Sullivain CO). I think I spelled those Co's wrong but is late!

Good Luck!

navynurse,

You are correct. There are excellent schools in Kingsport (Sullivan Co.) and Johnson City (Washington Co.) These school systems are located in northeast TN and I would highly recommend them.

I live in Kingsport and have had kids in the school system for 12 years now. Be aware there are 2 school systems in Kingsport- city and county. We are city-try school's web site I believe it is http://www.k12k.com
