Possibility of coming back home to Oz

Published

Hi there

I might be returning to oz soon. I have been living in Canada and doing non nursing work. I have only one year nursing experience from when I was living in Brisbane and if I do return I am having a hard time figuring out where I wanna work again in Brisbane and how to nurse again.

Any suggestions? Thanks

Hi,

Canada is a great place to live and work, I hope you enjoyed the experience.

Some things to ponder regarding what type of work you want when you get back to Aus:

Think about why you did nursing.

Think about which areas of nursing sounded interesting to you as a new grad, as a student.

If you are interested in a specialty area, then now is the time to apply as hospital networks are interviewing for 2009 now. The government & many hospitals offer scholarships to do courses. Some are bonded, some aren't. They are worth checking out.

Don't worry if you don't have experience in any specialty area, they are looking for people who are keen to learn new skills.

If the thought of returning to an acute care area is a bit much, then look for jobs that involve working in the community, doctors office etc.

Maybe you would be interested in working for a cosmetic dermatologist or something like that.

Don't think for a moment that a year off will disadvantage you, it won't. It is no more than someone would take on maternity leave.

I hope that gives you some ideas.

Hi JoanneP

Thanks for your advice. Yeh Canada is a good place to live and work. I used to live here in Canada 7 years ago before ever thinking of working as a nurse.

You have given me some things to think about and I thank you for that.

However, should I not return this year, it will definetly be next year. Which will mean I will have 2 years away from the profession.

kind regards

Kylie

I plan to work as a RN in both countries some time soon. I would like to ask you to compare and contrast Canada vs Australia in areas like cost of living, job market, health care, crime rates. Which country do you like better?

Sounds like a school assignment: "compare and contrast"! Heh.

You should be able to find cost of living, job market, health care, crime rates info online.

No doubt I can. But it's always better to hear from someone who has actually experienced it.

Hi Kosmonavt

I love both countries but its pretty obvious which one will be my favorite and that is Australia because its my home country. My husband is Canadian and he loves Australia but he also feels more bias for Canada. We are so opposite

In calgary, the job market is huge, lots of opportunities for nurses to work there, as well as in Brisbane Australia too.

Cost of living is the same in both countries, however I have heard British Colombia is slightly cheaper for groceries???? I find that Brisbane and Calgary are pretty much the same with groceries prices.

Crime rates, well there is crime everywhere but I find I hear it more on Calgary news then in Brisbane. Its not the Calgary I used to know 7 years ago when I used to live there. It has changed alot due to the boom too.

Anyways, thats all i can tell you really.

Good luck for your future prospects.
