Portland oncology nursing?

Hi everyone!

I am 95% sure my family will be moving to Portland, likely within the next 1-2 years. My partner's a writer, so can live anywhere, but I've been an oncology nurse, specifically a "chemo nurse" (aka infusion nurse) for almost 6 years, and love my field. I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts/insights/opinions about the various cancer centers and oncology clinics in the Portland/Vancouver (we are leaning toward North Portland) area -- employers with good or bad reputations as far as quality of care, treatment of nurses, and so on? Possibly relevant: I don't have a BSN (I have a BA in another field + an ADN) -- it seems that OHSU "requires" outside applicants to have one. Any thoughts on how strict this requirement is, and/or whether this will be an issue with other employers in the area?

Obviously, I'm a way off from being ready to apply for jobs, but I'm excited about and interested in what my best options may be when the time comes. Thanks so much!

If you don't plan to move for another year or so- is it possible to go and get your BSN? Most of the Portland area hospitals require it. And from what I've seen and heard- they don't budge from it.

I'm not sure, though, if clinics and outpatient areas require it. OHSU has a great inpatient oncology unit (I know someone who loves working there).

Sorry I'm not more help. I would just recommend getting your BSN online and then you'll have no problem finding a job out here!

Than you for the insight! I have to admit the work/debt involved in getting a BSN isn't too appealing... but I will definitely research my options. Thanks again!

Would second that on getting the BSN.

Providence a fairly large health care system here (5 hospitals in area)has made the BSN a requirement for all new hired nurses and for current staff I believe they have until 2018.

Legacy (6 hospitals in area) same deal BSN by 2020, but I do believe they will hire experienced nurses with ADN.

Thank you! This is very helpful! I have found a couple of programs that I think I could do in a reasonable amount of time for a reasonable amount of money. Now just need to decide if I definitely want to get my BSN first, or try to get a job *without* my BSN, just in case I get lucky, with an online BSN program as my back up plan...

With 6 yrs experience it shouldn't be too hard. The Portland area has 7 nursing schools so the market is tuff for new grads, but is easier on those with experience. As long as you are in the process of getting the BSN. I know Prov used to have on their online apps you either checked yes BSN or enrolled in program or no BSN as one of their screening questions.
