Poppyseeds

Published

I feel like such an idiot. I got food from my hospital cafeteria and didn't realize until I had eaten a few bites that it had been seasoned with everything but the bagel seasoning. It's my first week working since being placed on probation and it feels like a cruel joke that the hospital seasons food with that?! I ended up puking to hopefully get rid of any poppyseeds-again, another cruel joke because I never saw myself willingly puking. Here's my issue- Google says it can take up to 48 hours to not show a positive. I can probably even have the hospital confirm they use the seasoning. I am prematurely freaking out because I haven't even been chosen to test. In fact, I wouldn't be selected tomorrow because I work 7-7 and thankfully they work around your work schedule so you can work and not get in trouble for not being able to test those days. I have been clean over 8 months now and I am just so scared. This was a huge wake up call to pay attention to seasonings and I'll 100% bring all of my food from now on. Guess I'm looking for people who can relate to being scared over a tiny poppyseed 🥹

You will test negative. Don't worry. Poppy seeds are not good and give a false positive on rare occasions. Yes, it happens, but it is RARE and Poppy Seeds do NOT cause a positive for THC,  but only Morphine/Codeine/Opiates. The data on poppy seeds suggest that over 90 percent of all positive test related to poppy seeds occurs within 24 hours of ingestion and only 10 percent occur between 24 to 48 hours of ingestion and after 48 hours, the percentage that test positive is less than 0.1 percent. What does the above mean?

It takes a whole lot of poppy seeds to test positive and it's rare, but happens, and when it does happen, it's completely unheard of if more than 48 hours have passed since ingestion and it's not even likely to happen after 24 hours have passed. You actually in clear at 24 hours unless you eat like 4 bagels or 4 poppy seed muffins.

More people get in trouble for vanilla extract (rum based) cake icing and cupcake icing which literally contains alcohol than they do poppy seeds.

Lastly one study showed it takes 1/3rd of a cup of poppy seeds to trigger a positive if tested within 24 hours and people don't realize how much 1/3rd of a cup is. 1/3rd of a cup of pure poppy seeds is the amount thst could season 2.5 whole poppy seed bagels. The amount of poppy seeds on your average bagel is about 1/8th of a cup.

You have basically zero chance of testing positive.

You'll probably test negative. If it were me I'd call or email your case manager today just in case. I think it it was positive a has chromatography test could tell the difference but who knows it the labs used have that.  I'm dying for poppy seeds.  I truly miss them

Unfortunately, Gas Chromatography actually can NOT detect the difference in poppy seed ingestion versus Morphine (the prototypical opiate-natural alkaloid).  Poppy resin (found in poppy seeds) contain the natural pure alkaloid opiate (Papaver somniferum) which is essentially pure morphine/thebaines.  In summary, poppy seeds and Morphine are literally the same exact thing AS it Relates to their end products and primary alkaloid component.

Same problem above with vanilla extract.  If it's rum based vanilla extract, GC can't differentiate cake icing made with rum based vanilla extract from actual alcohol because the main component is literally alcohol.

Did you ever get selected?

It takes quite a bit of poppyseeds to test positive in the urine, as others have said here.  One data point/experience - I accidentally ate a poppyseed bagel one morning since I was so hungry and was going through the motions.  I got selected for a urine test the next morning so 24 hours later, I had to test.  Was all negative.

All the food false positives are mostly overblown and exaggerated.

I'm dying to eat food that has poppy seeds.  I'll wait just in case. Poppy seed bread,  poppy seed muffins, bagels yum

One time, I had to have a poppyseed muffin and another time, a fresh Everything bagel made by a local bagel shop.  If I need to eat that, I usually have it on a Friday (when I know I won't be selected for testing on Sat or Sun).  It's out of your system by Monday.  So you're good to go if you want to satisfy your craving.

Ty but I'm taking no chances. I could get a hair or nail test. I want to finish my sentence.  I'm going to eat drink and be merry when this is over.

I'm so sorry for the late reply. Going back to work has drained me because it's another thing added to my plate.

thankfully I wasn't selected! I did have to test with my recovery center 5 days later and I told them as well. Because I have worked way too hard to let a small poppyseed ruin it.

also thank everyone for the advice! I'm sure I would've been negative at 24 hours and even 48 because I think I had such a small amount! I do now take my own lunch to work out of safety. I did tell my manager "hey what's with the seasoning when you know it can create false positives for people”🥲😅
