How many of you parents have decided to go into nursing due to having a child with medical issues?

Are you willing to share your experiences?

Just curious...:D

So do I. I have two. One is no longer with us. :saint:

I get the feeling that this is a common path for parents with special kids. I thought I'd test it here.

I hope your little one is doing well.:redbeathe

Thanks for replying.

My little guy has HLHS. He is doing well and is now 18 months so we are heading for the 3rd stage surgery, the Fontan.

I am sorry to hear about your little one. How is your other child doing?

How far along are you with the nursing? I am in A&P I and II over the summer, just did my first exam today.

Specializes in none yet!.

My partners 4 yo has type one diabetes (diagnosed at two). Certainly played a role in my decision.

I have no experience with diabetes in children, but have several older relatives with Type II. I can't imagine the difficulties of controlling this disease in a child.

Blessings to you!

Both of my boys had/have variations of HRHS. My oldest also had complete heart block.

My youngest also has Wolff Parkinson White. He is two years old. We are waiting now to hear if he will need the Glenn. We were told to expect the Fontan path before his birth, but now believe he will be on the 1 1/2 track. He's doing well. :)

I'm just getting started in nursing-waiting for my acceptance letter for the fall. I'm going for the LPN first, due to grant money and the evening program very close to home.

Good luck to you~

Anyone else??

Wow, my heart goes out to all of you.

When my oldest daughter (now 9 y/o) was 2 weeks old she was diagnosed with pyloricstenosis. Come to find out her father (my DH) as well has his father (my FIL) also had this as babies. It required a minor surgery but that is sparked my interest in the human body.

Diabetes is very tough to control in a young child. He takes his shots and blood tests very well, but his sugar levels tend to be everywhere - getting a 4 yo to eat the 'right' carbs, enough carbs, at given times only is a real challenge. Add to that the fast growth rate and it is difficult to manage insulin shot levels. Also some days they are very active, and some days not, and knowing what day is going to be when, when you give the shot in the morning is tough. But we are getting there! Once he is old enough to understand we will be able to consider an insulin pump option, but right now he would just rip it off himself!

Specializes in PICU.

For the Mom with the HLHS where is yoru child getting the surgeries done ?? I worked at a hospital in Chicago that had one of the best for the HLHS surgeries.. Just wondering ?? I know there are only a few in the nation that are great !!! :) I got into nursing because I love children and medical, but then I got pregnant while in school and took off 6 years and my children have had medical problems but nothing major just a few surgeries here and there .. Good luck to everyone

Specializes in hoping to be mother/baby nurse.

my daughter has epilepsy, and that has definitaly played a role in my decision to go into nursing. my heart goes out to all of you mothers and children out there.

Specializes in PICU/Pedi.

I never even thought about being a nurse until my daughters were born 2 months prematurely, and spent 5 weeks in NICU. They are fine now, though.
