Polk Community College

Does anyone know anything about the polk community college nursing program? how are the admissions like, and if it has a waiting list or not.. just curious

I graduated from PCC in 1993.

You can fail one Nursing School Course once. Failure of more than one Nursing School course or the same Nursing Course twice and you are generally out. I have heard of some people challenging that with varying results.

This does not apply to prereqs.

If you passed A%P with a "C" on the first try, I don't think that it is a problem. It is when it has taken several attempts to pass that it is a problem. They also consider individual issues. I got a B in A&P II, but my instructor brought out that I did that with having missed two weeks with Mono (actually initially diagnosed in the blood lab part of class).

Thank you, thats good to know. I hope I don't have to worry about that though if I get the opportunity to enroll in the program. I think I am so worried now, because of this teacher we have. It is just an 8 week course, but the teacher does not explain things well, and just leaves us on our own in the labs...then when she reviews for the exam (which isn't much) different things are on the test than what she said! So that, in combination with work is stressful, and I just want to do well in the class.

Wow, you did good in A&P with missing 2 weeks! That must have been tough to do. I am glad to hear that they look at individual circumstances of the students!

Wow, thats a tough grading scale! What happens when people fail...they get dropped out of the program?! Can they ever get back in?

No, I have not applied to the program yet but I am really nervous about applying. I want to do well in anatomy and physiology I, but the teacher we have is not helping much...she's new and I believe this is her first term teaching @ PCC. I am just scared that if I end up with a 'C' in the class and then apply in August for January, that they might not accept me. I am hoping that maybe if they see from my transcript that I already have a B.S. Degree that will have some influence, but I don't get the feeling it will. However, whenever I have spoken to the advisor...they don't make it sound like its difficult to get into the program. Everyone has a different story...I heard some students talking the other night in class and they were saying how you can take all of the classes in the nursing program (except Nursing I-V) before you ever get accepted! I don't think that is the case because if that was something that was allowed, the advisors would probably be promoting it. Thanks for the good luck! I will definately need it!

Its true that you can only fail a nursing class once, then you retake it. But once you have failed any nursing class, you cant fail another. So if you fail Nursing I and have to retake it, you cant fail another class in the program or you are out. I have heard that you can come back into the program after one or two years but I havent actually seen it.

Dont quote me on this but I think you have to have Micro out of the way by the start of nursing IV and Human Development out of the way by the start of Nursing V. I highly recommend that you complete these classes before beginning the program, it may also increase your chances of getting in and it will definately decrease your workload and stress levels while in the program.

Again, good luck.

Just wondering if anyone else on here is applying for the spring program. Also, does anyone know when they send out the acceptance letters for spring. Would it be around October?

I have applied for admission in the spring semester. One of my friends is a nurse who graduated a year or so ago, and she told me that it took a while for her to get her letter. However, that was three years ago. Maybe they've streamlined their process (I hope). I'm dying to know if I got in! :uhoh3:

I happen to be acquainted with one of the nursing instructors, and the last time I saw her, I mentioned that I had submitted my application. The very first question she asked was, "How many of the pre-requisites have you completed?" I've finished all but Microbiology, which I'm taking this semester. She said that was very good, since the first thing they consider is number of pre-requisites completed. And then they consider GPA. She was also telling me that someone else she knew had applied for the spring semester, but did not have as many pre-reqs completed and that she didn't think they were going to get in based on that.

I don't know about anyone else here, but I am very excited to be going to this program. I've heard from many people that PCC's nursing program is one of the best in the state. I've also heard that local hospitals are more inclined to hire a nurse from PCC than from HCC, but I don't know if that's really true. No offense to anyone attending HCC, though! Just a rumor I've heard.

Yea, I know last semester they had about 200-300 (so I heard) people apply and they only accepted around 75. It use to be where you just had to have the 4 pre-req's completed, but it's so competitive now you have to have your co-reqs completed in time for January. Least that's how it was last year. I hear Spring semester usually isn't as competive as Fall. I have all my classes done except for A&PII which I have this semester. So I'm hoping I get in. I know the people that applied for Fall (in march) didn't get their letters until the middle of june. So I really don't think we will get our letters until oct. :o

The hospitals here have a scholarship/loan that you can sign, and they will pay for all your books and tuition. For each year though, you have to work a year at any one of the hospitals in the county, or pay back the money as a interest-free loan. You probably heard about that already though.

I looked at the last Pass percent listed for the RN programs in Florida (2002-2003) on the Florida Nursing Board and PCC is one of the top five out of the 42 schools.

South Florida CC 100%

University of Florida 98.7%

Central Florida CC 98.0%

Polk CC 94.8%

University of South Florida 94.3%

Oh, and HCC's- 73.5%

So that might be why you heard that rumor.

Doggone it, you beat me to it!! I've been looking for those statistics for a few days now and just found it a minute ago. PCC is #4 in FL. HCC is third from the lowest...the other two are 64.5% and 50%! :imbar even so, 73.5% is not good.

I think you're referring to the Partnership for Success program. I hope I qualify, even though I'll still have to take out a Stafford loan to cover what they won't pay for, uniforms, supplies, pda, etc... :angryfire

Anyone who is a nursing student at PCC qualifies for the Partnership Program after filling out the FASFA form. Usually, if you qualify for another form of financial aid, they will use that first, then what that doesnt cover, the Partnership program will. Uniforms arent that expensive and you really only need one. Two is smarter, but if you are on a tight budget, one will due. PDA's really arent used unless thats what YOU want to use. I know of only one or two that use them for now and it isnt really necessary for the program.

Hi,

Would you happen to remember how you got those statistics for school's 'pass percentage'?

Thank you so much. That was exactly what I was looking for! I am trying to choose between PCC and HCC. I was accepted to both programs :)

Does anyone know if PCC offers day and evening programs? I work full time during the day and am looking to go to nursing school full or part time in the evening. So far my choices are Erwin Tech (in tampa), HCC, PCC. Thank you!
