how hard is it to get into the traditional BSN program at ASU? does anyone know the average gpa (both prerequisite and overall) that classes tend to need? also, how hard is it compared to univ. of arizona?
  4. How competitive is it to get into UF and FSU for nursing? i have noticed that many of the schools in "metro" locations tend to be a bit more selective, i am assuming because people are switching careers in cities and the schools are getting flooded with applications from both college students and 2nd degree students. here, in tampa, i know usf is damn near impossible. i was wondering if anyone knew if it was difficult at "rural" schools, because less peopel are willing to move... for example: UF or FSU
  5. how are the opportunities for NPs in florida? I kinda wanted to work in a hospital setting before I take over the practice.

  7. I just had a general question about owning your own practice as a Nurse Practitioner. My father is a Physician with his own family practice. I was wondering, if i were to get my MSN as a Family Nurse Practitioner, would I be able to take over my father's practice? He's planning on retiring and I think it would be great if i could take over the family business. How exactly does it work? I have read that you need to have a "collaborating" physician with you, so i dont know exactly if you are COMPLETELY independent. We are from florida too, so i was wondering if there were regulations as to practicing in our state. I know some states dont allow you to be independent.

  9. unlike most of you people who posted replys, i dont have any dependents to worry about and my job doesnt pay that great.. granted, it is a starting point, its not like i'm sacrificing a high paying job... in fact, i work in nyc and live with relatives in jersey because of rent issues.. and the tuition for school wouldnt be a factor. both my parents are in the medical field and have always wanted me to go.. i think they'd be happy to finance what they've always dreamed of. in sum, i've got nothing to lose (except for an entry level job) and all to gain from this... the only gamble is doing well in prereqs.. but, unlike when i was 18, i feel a little more determined with school because i'm not just "going through the motions" of school... even with these arguments, should i?
  10. someone? anyone? please? help?
  11. THE QUESTION IS: WHEN IS IT "TIME"? I know a lot of you will think this is ludicrous judging by my age, but I feel as if i need some serious advice about this. I'll give you guys the story in a nutshell.. i graduated last may of 2003 with a business degree. Because of the recent economy, I was job searching for about a good 8 months until i landed at the ad agency where i am at today (got the job january 2004). I interned at a lot of ad agencies in college and swore it was what i wanted to do (at least throughout my 20s). however, i had much of an "epiphany" the week before i got my job at the agency-- it was to be a nurse. i thought that maybe all my months of unemployment were just speaking to me, especially after hearing about the shortage in nurses. as the weeks progressed, i still couldnt stop thinking about it, even after i had started my new job and was going through the motions. I like everyone at work and the work that i do for the company is fine. its entry level, so i expect not to make many critical decisions.. but i guess i never saw myself in an upper level position and i'm starting to realize that chasing the almighty dollar isnt what makes me happy- in sum, i dont think i have a future in this i have decided to take it slow and make a rational decision before anything.. i've signed up to volunteer at a local hospital and have decided to take 1 pre-req class at a local community college. if i do leave, it will be right before may (when summer school starts for colleges, so i can start prereqs), which would only make my "business career" 4 months... the big question: is it too early for me to leave this job for nursing? i know this message board is a little bit biased, but I really do feel as if this is a "calling" and not just a phase. i am young (22) and i can make a lot of changes still, but people are telling me that i owe it to myself to stick around at this job because all those months of being unemployed.. but in contrast to that- i think to myself "why should i keep on lying to myself? i know i'm not going to be here in the long run, so why should i appeal to what everyone 'suggests' that i do?" WELL, SHOULD I?
  12. does anyone know if nursing schools in florida accept anything aside from the prereq GPA in determining admission? i am afraid my "C" in economics and other un-related classes will screw me over with the state schools here... also, i got a "D" in sociology and a "C" in stats my freshman year of college because i was going through the whole "party in college" thing.. should i retake these classes? how hard is it to get into USF? UCF? UF? FSU? FIU? UNF? MIAMI?.. i'm trying to get a BSN
  13. i'm more interested in BSN programs rather than any ADN programs that might be out there.. i've already got my bachelor's in another field and plan on just taking the prereqs for nursing... so, if you did your ADN in fla, i am not interested...
  14. if anyone is out there that has attended (or currently attends) a nursing school in the state of florida, please reply with a post about the admissions standards for your school.. i have a degree in economics and am planning on taking prereqs in community college.. i had about a 2.5 gpa from a top 25 private school, but my grades my 1st and 2nd year held down the overachieving of my last 2 years. i'm pretty sure i can ace community college, from what i've heard its like.. I PLAN ON APPLYING TO EVERY SCHOOL UNDER THE FLORIDA SUN.. public, private, WHATEVER I NEED TO GET MY BSN!!!! also, can anyone tell me about if any of the schools in fla ONLY look at ur prereq classes' grades.. or do they look at your overall???? i called ucf about their accelerated bsn program and they said they look at overall (but that doesnt make sense to me cuz i dont see them frowning upon my C in political science class, which is unrelated to medicine, my freshman year). ALL YOU FLORIDIANS, PLEASE HELP A FELLOW SUNSHINE-STATE RESIDENT!!
  15. i was wondering if there was any truth to the rumor that private nursing schools tend to be a lot easier to get into than public schools- mainly because less people apply to these schools due to their hefty pricetags.. i always hear about gaudy numbers of "500-600 applicants applying for 45 spots" on this message board and know that these kind of figures only come from public schools.. the sheer price of private schools would shun away most applicants who are in the middle of changing careers. in sum: DO PRIVATE SCHOOLS HAVE LOWER ADMISSION STANDARDS THAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS?
