policies and procedures

Hello all,

I am working in a High school in new York state with no policies and procedures manual. I came from a district that did more. I work with another nurse who just does nothing for the students. Ex. I asked her where the heating pad was so I can give it to a girl that has cramps.

She informed me that, that wasn't allowed. " not sure who told her that" her reasoning was the possibility of burns.

Also questioned when I let a student soak there finger

So now I am trying to find policies and procedures to adopt and bring to our school dr and director of health.

If you have any insight and can share your information that would be so helpful.

We aren't allowed to use them because our nurse practice act considers a hot pack "heat therapy" which requires a MD order.

Good Morning All!

I have the same problem sarenym has. I am new to school nursing in a private high that has never had a school nurse before. I would appreciate if anyone would be willing to share their policies and procedures with me. We have nothing in place and a lot to do in a short amount of time. Any and all help is greatly appreciated!!!!

Thank you

We are allowed to use a hot water bottle for cramps. That way it poses no risk of burns. However, I've rarely used it as the students either say it didn't help or don't want to lay still that long. Most of the time we just call a parent to bring in pain relievers.

We do have a district doctor who signs off on stuff for us. I can't believe those that are allowed to work without one. I agree, how can you give stock epinephrine? I think your state needs to address that further!

Back to the original question. Can you ask the former district you worked in for copies of policies? Our policy book is over 500 pages. A good starting point would be National School Nurses Association. Also make sure you get an policies approved by your administrators so it will protect you in following protocol if someone ever has a complaint.
