POA-plan of action and a little Whining-Sorry

So I am a transfer student working on my last few pre-reqs before I can apply to the nursing program at RIC...Just need some guidance.

I took Anatomy at Ric this summer and got a B+ :cry: (really wanted an A)

I am taking Chem 105 and Physiology this semester.

Next semester I will take Chem 106 THEN apply. Is that right? The way I am thinking the earliest I could possibly get in is Fall 2010 right?!

Currently my GPA is sitting at a 3.33 which is obviously too low to get in therefore I need A's in my classes to boost it up. I am so stressed because I am really struggling in physiology! I feel like I am not smart enough. I mean I am struggling in conversions! I have been out of school since about 2000, have 2 small kids, married and stink at math!

I have not even been formally accepted in RIC much less declaring a major! Application is in though!

Any thoughts. Is there something I am missing or something that I should be focusing on?

Ok, first...BREATHE! :D I know it's so easy to get stressed but try to relax and take everything in stride. I am going to go through all of your questions and try to give my best advice.

1)YES...if you take Chem 106 next semester AND you have all of your other prereq's completed (Psych, Bio, etc) you would be eligible to apply for the fall semester. I would highly suggest you take Micro over the summer if you haven't yet. The more courses you have completed when applying, the better. If you get in for fall, you will receive your acceptance letter at some point in June.

2) I had a 3.3 when I was accepted. So do not let that scare you. The main thing that they look at in admissions is your grades for psychs, chems, and bios. If those grades are good (high B's and better), you have a decent shot. Be aware, though, I was also a transfer student. RIC Nursing takes transfers and second degree students as last priority. I was accepted into RIC as a transfer at the end of 2006, started in January 2007, and got into nursing on my second application for Fall 2008.

3) If you are struggling, please get help. There is OASIS and of course your teachers should be glad to meet with you and offer extra assistance. You could also contact the math department and see if there is someone who can tutor you with the basic stuff like conversions, etc.

4) You are smart enough! If nursing is what you really want then you will find a way to get through these classes with good grades. Keep a positive attitude. I had very similar feelings about my own abilities when I was at your stage in the game....but I just kept working...and even after one rejection I went back at it! :D I am now a junior taking Psych (N340) and Maternity (N344) and I can tell you it was worth all the hassle. In the first year nsg courses I got an A, an A- and two B+. I love my classes, and I'm looking forward to graduating next year.

Be proud of yourself and know that it's not easy for anyone (even the students who claim otherwise). And, if you ever want help from someone who's been through it before, let me know and I can make time to meet with you.

Thank you so much for all your words of encoragement! I did notice today (in fact) the tutors for physiology so I will be taking them up on the help!

I am SO excited about a career in nursing and can't wait to get my hands dirty! LOL

I agree with Lauren, your doing really great! Your GPA isn't really bad at all, sure its not perfect but its pretty darn good. Just keep up the good grades, take Chem 106 next semester and then apply to the program. Trust me once you start doing clinicals you will know that it was all worth it. Until then just keep it up!
