PNP at UPenn

U.S.A. Pennsylvania

Hello, I was accepted to the PNP program at UPenn and am wondering if anyone has been through the program and has any positive or negative comments about the program, the city, the students, faculty? thanks!

Just wondering if you ended up starting the pnp program at penn and how it is going? If you wouldn't mind, I'd love to hear what you like most/least about the program. I applied and currently waiting to hear back. Also, do they require an interview for acceptance? Thanks!

Jealous! Penn has an excellent reputation for nursing, and I'm thinking about applying for my grad program. Philadelphia sucks as a city, and Penn is in the ugliest part of it, but the school is tremendous. Every bit of nursing research seems to be coming out of there lately...

aura of laura - where are you getting your opinion os philadelphia sucking as a city? Have you lived there? I was thinking of transferring up there and possibly getting in to UPENN's ACNP program....I'd love to hear more of your thoughts about the area. Thanks.

I actually love West Philly and think it has some of the prettiest streets in the city, and a generally nice vibe compared with the rest of the city.

I've lived here 4 years and it's kinda dirty, high crime rate, and people can be rude and mean here. It's also fairly self segregated in most neighborhoods. I don't love the city, but I find things to like about being here, if that makes sense. For nursing/health care, aside from the crappy job market, it's a really great area to be, with a lot of great hospitals doing cutting edge patient care.

I know this is late, but I was accepted to Penn's ANP program and yes, they do require an interview, but it can be done over the phone. At least mine was. I'll be starting there in January and I can't wait. :)

Congrats, AtomicWoman!

I'm starting FACT at Jeff in a few months and have been considering Penn's PNP program as well. The only negatives I've heard are that Penn as a whole can be snooty, since not only are they Ivy League, but their nursing department is among the top 10 in the US.

I grew up in the Philly 'burbs and spent a chunk of my early 20s in the city and think it's a great city! I've been in NYC the past 6 years, but Philly's great too. I don't know why people would say it's sucky - good arts, good art houses for films, good restaurants, good parks, good neighborhoods. But to each his/her own.

Thanks! I am pretty proud of being accepted at Penn, as their ANP program has been ranked #1 by USN&WR for years, and they only take about 25 people per cohort. As for their being snooty, I haven't spent time on campus yet, but I was blown away by one thing: every professor I emailed, even with a general inquiry, emailed me right back, offered to speak with me on the phone, was very warm, etc. I was totally expecting them to be hard to communicate with! And they have some lovely people who work in the nursing graduate admissions department. I recommend you attend one of UPenn's open houses. That way, you'll make some initial contacts. I found that very helpful when I was actually completing the application process. You can fill out the "request for information" on this page Penn Nursing Admissions

, and then you will be "in the loop" for announcements for open houses. Also, they waive the application fee if you attend an open house. :) Listen to me, you haven't even started FACT yet and I have you applying to Penn's MSN program. LOL!

So exciting for you! I wish you the best of luck!

Thanks for the tips! It certainly helps to have a plan for the future. Before I know it, FACT will be over and I'll be searching for a graduate program. Aren't you in FACT?

Hey AtomicWoman. I have been accepted into the ANP program as well..... well actually the GNP/ANP dual program. Anyway, my program begins in May. You start in January? Do you already have a BSN or are you doing the direct entry thing?

I have a BSN. I'm going part-time, starting this month. I was supposed to start in September, but put it off because of a new job. I'll be doing ANP/GNP as well. They are suggesting all of us do that, because eventually the two programs will become one. I don't know what the time line for that is. When do you do your clinicals? Mine start Fall 2012 with Clinical Decision Making in Summer 2012.

I'm not sure when I do clinicals. I am going to go full-time and I don't start until May. I know you are excited to start classes!!!! Are you from Philadelphia?
