Lately I've been entertaining the idea of PMHNP other than critical care. I enjoy nursing in the critical care arena but also think I may enjoy mental health as a future provider. May be a good move in the future. Mental health professionals; NPs specifically chime in...…… Of course I plan to shadow all grad school prospects on the way to decisioning #pondering

I was thinking of scenarios like my significant other experiences in tele-psych treating mostly Medicaid/homeless clients in rural Arizona. Many of these patients don't have a regular primary physician or NP and when they do there is little (or not) coordination/communication with these providers. Thus, in my scenario you would "own" the clinic and have providers who were psych and medical (also in my scenario there would be robust support for CAM interventions both in psych and primary).

I also think that someone considering becoming an FNP and owning their own clinic might be well served by also becoming an acute care NP. This would allow them to better "follow" their patients in the hospital (they would still have to obtain privileges but their ability to do so might be better facilitated). On the other hand this "dual certification" would take the same time (or longer) as obtaining their DNP so again it would be something where the "pro's and cons" would have to be carefully weighted.
