Hi everyone, I'll be graduating from a PMHNP program in TX soon, and am looking for independent practice states nearby, I've heard CO is nice. Does anyone have any thoughts on being an APRN in CO, or more specifically practicing as a PMHNP?
I also saw that there is a mandatory 1800-hour preceptorship required for prescriptive authority. Can this requirement be waived if I have 1800+ hours of supervised practice in TX? I've read what I can from various websites and the CO BON, but couldn't find an answer or contact info on the BON website.

If you haven't yet graduated, then the 1800 hours would not count. The hours needed for prescriptive authority are AFTER graduation, when you're working as an NP.
Thanks for replying Klone, yes I'm aware that the 1800 hours pertains to post-licensure. I plan on working in TX for a couple years to become proficient and continue my education at the provider level. I am curious if this time will count towards that 1800 hours or not.
Ah. I don't know for sure, but I'm pretty sure it does count. I've never heard of an experienced NP having to go through probationary practice before prescriptive authority is granted, only brand new ones.
Cool thanks! How do you like working as a nurse in CO?

Don't advertise you are from Texas if you move here.
care to elaborate? Do Texans have a bad rep in CO?
Yes. Especially in the mountains
I've personally never encountered that.

I love Texas and tell people all the time. Never heard a bad word about Texas here? That's very strange and honestly if anyone acted that immature I don't think I would want speak to them or hang out with them. That's a moment when you need let them know that it is time to grow up and act like a big kid.
Thanks cwilhelm1977, I certainly wouldn't let the strange regional bias of a few folks stop me from pursuing a position I wanted, it's odd to think a person would dislike me based on where I'm from before he/she knew me, but it's good to be aware that the prejudice exists, even if it's just for a surly minority
