Please tell me other new grads were completly overwhelmed

Published

On their first day of work! I just did my first day on the floor with my preceptor at my new job, and I felt sooo overwhelmed. I have so so so much more to learn and I just feel so lost. I know this is somewhat normal, b/c I've felt overwhelmed on my first day at most every job I've ever had (this is not my first career), but people's lives were never on the line. How long did it take you to feel comfortable in your first nursing job?

Specializes in geriatrics.

It gets easier as you gain confidence and master certain things, but I don't think any nurse should ever feel totally comfortable. That can potentially be dangerous, because you have to go with the flow and expect the unexpected.

Ive just finished my first week on an ortho/surgical floor and i feel that i know nothing, im in over my head! Most of my training was medical (only 6 weeks surgical in a different area) so im having to learn every single little surgical thing, even small things such as staple removal.

But according to my mentors, this is a normal feeling.
