Please tell me I'm confused...

Lets see if I can remember. Chem was a Pre Req for Organic Chem and Chem was a pre req to Micro for me. I think Micro it was just Chem and not Organic Chem, I can't remember but I had taken both anyway. Than A&P 1 was pre for A&P 2 but they did make exceptions to let students take concurrent sometimes, and that was Pre for Patho-physiology.

Is there any way you can take your courses at a different institution? I have never heard of chemistry being a pre-req to Micro. Plus, a lot of schools offer Anatomy and Physiology together in a two-semester sequence.

Most schools you could swing this in two semesters

Fall

Anatomy and Physiology I

Chemistry

Another class

Spring

Anatomy and Physiology II

Microbiology

Another class

All Nursing schools (as far as I know) WILL accept transfer credits from another institution including community college courses if you are currently at a 4-year school. There is absolutely no reason why your pre-reqs should have to take you more than one year. Or a year and half at the most. Realisticly a different school *should* have you wrapped up by Dec 2010, making you eligible for your Nursing school cutoff date.

I had to take organic chem as a pre-req for micro. I am on my third year of school and finally just have one semester left to go. Here's the classes I have taken and the order I have taken them in:

English

Psychology

History

Pharm. Math

Political Science

Organic Chemistry

Intro to A&P

Nutrition

Computers

Medical Terminology

Anatomy (currently)

Microbiology (currently)

Physiology (Fall '09)

At my school, you need your three sciences plus math, English, and Psych to apply. The problem with that is that you need to work up enough units to get an early enough registration date to even get into the classes. I JUST made it into Physio, I was so worried. I got one of the last three spots and I have taken all the above classes! Also, we need to be done with all our classes in the fall to apply the following spring. We can't be in progress, we have to be done before applying. It's been a tough process, but I'm almost there! We only have one application a year; about 600 names for 44 spots (some of those names are in more than once; it's a lottery system and your name gets added one more time each year you apply, up to 4 times). It's not unheard of to take 3-5 years before we even get into the program.

Sorry this is so long, just wanted you to know you're not alone in this crazy process. I can honestly say I am 100% sure I will not change majors, this is what I want to do and it's the ONLY thing I want to do. You'll have to figure out for yourself if it's worth it to you. Good luck!! :)

See - that would work perfectly. I think I'm going to check out the other two schools. I like that mine is convenient (2 min away) but I'd rather drive 30 min each way and cut my schooling in 1/2.

That is how I did mine, I did A&P1 and Chem one quarter (my old school we had quarters not semesters) and the next quarter I did Organic Chem and A&P 2 than I moved to CO and here I did Micro and 3 Credit Nutrition and Pathophysiology.

Since Chem was the requirements for Organic and than for Micro and A&P were eventually for Patho I could take those 2 together.

I'm sorry. I was totally confused. It's not organic chem... it's just regular chem. I dont know why I kept thinking it was organic. dumb.

OK - my counselor told me I needed to do classes in that order but Im going through the online catalog and it has mirco as an 'advisory' not a 'pre-req' for anatomy which means I CAN do the schedule above.

OK, so I was totally confused. Now I have to figure out how to set up my schedule and beg my way into anatomy in the fall.

I am glad to see that you came back to allnurses!

At my school we have the same set up, pre-reqs for pre-reqs. I haven't been in this particular situation but I have met many people who have been. This guy in my NAS 162 class was enrolled in both NAS 161 and NAS 162 at the very same time. Trust me, you just need to talk to the right person. Don't take no for an answer. If your counselor says no then ask to speak to either somebody else or the person above her. Or, just ask the teacher who you need to talk to in order to enroll in both. You may need permission from the teacher as well.

Glad to hear that Micro is an "advisory." Certainly talking to the right person as someone said will help--especially the instructor. At my 4-yr university I minored in Biology and none of the pre-reqs had pre-reqs (you could take Anatomy, Physiology, and Micro in any order). At the community college I'm going to now (as a post-baccalaureate student) you have to have completed Anatomy and Physiology I to get into Micro--and yours is the complete opposite. So it is clearly individualized to the schools. I would talk to someone else and say you can handle taking Anatomy without first taking Micro especially since there is really no basis for taking Micro first--as so many schools don't require you to. If they don't want to help you, take your money elsewhere you have yourself to think about and spending an extra semester on pre-reqs delaying you a whole year in Nursing is not in your best interest. Good luck!! And if it means driving an extra 30 minutes it's well worth it to get in the field you love quicker!!!

Ugh. Realized that the Chem class I was signed for was at the wrong campus (one I cant go to)

So now - assessment for English (mine expired )

And I'm going to have to add into ALL my classes in the Fall

At my school, college algebra was a pre-req for general chemistry, which was a pre-req for both micro and organic chem, which were required for the BSN program in nursing. No wonder it took be five semesters to get through all my pre-reqs!

My school is the same way, all you have to do is get approved, it's not that big of a deal. People can even enroll in A&P I and A&P II at the same time if they wanted to.
