Please help with surgical questions

Published

I have a few questions that despite my endless research I cannot find anywhere. If anyone could help me with where to find the info, or if you know the answer too that would be great.

If the client is scheduled to have surgery within the next 2 hours and they tell you in the admission interview the following info which piece of info would you be certain to communicate on the outside of the chart for the entire surgical team to know.

a) the client is allergic to cats

b) the client is hard of hearing

c)the client had a glass of wine 24 hours ago

d) the client takes 2000 mg of vit C each day

to me all of this info is important, allergies need to be known, but I don't know if an allergy to cats is a priority. if the client had a glass of wine 24 hours ago I would think that it would already be out of his system, so I wouldn't think that would be a priority the client is hard of hearing which is important but don't know if that's essential. I am thinking that it's d, the client taking vit c each day since this may interfere with some meds that they are going to be given? am I on the right track?

the next one i'm having trouble with is what dietary modifications you should teach to the client who is going home with an extensive would after surgery.

a) drink at least 4 L of fluid every day

b) eating dietary fiber can help prevent constipation

c) be sure you are getting adequate amounts of vit C in your diet

d) try to lose weight so that you don't put too much strain on the incision.

I know that fluid is important but don't know that a would be correct. I know it's not d, I'm unsure of b and c. I'm thinking it's b, because they may still be on pain killers that could cause constipation so fiber would be important to know? am I on the right track?

Thanks for any help, it is appreciated. :)

I think C (alcohol) might be correct for question number one because it's a CNS depressant and I'm not sure how long alcohol stays in the body....it could possibly affect the amount of anesthesia given...?!

For question number two, I'd say C because vitamin C is good for wound healing. Also, it doesn't say where the wound is so how do you know straining would cause incision to open (straining with constipation). The vitamin C would apply to any wound.

I'm a student too so these are just my thoughts...

an allergy to cats is important, but not for the surgical team to know. a glass of wine ingested 24 hours ago will have been processed by the body already. 2000 mg of vitamin c each day is something the surgeon should be made aware of already. everyone on the surgical team needs to know that the patient is hard of hearing especially when anesthesia has been given to the patient. in post anesthesia recovery they will be talking to the patient and need to be able to know if the patient can understand simple commands.

vitamin c is important in the healing of wounds.
