Placental Accreta

hi all..this is my first post!! i hope someone can give me some insight! i'm not looking for any medical advice, per se..just some insight!! i am 39, have a 2 year old. i m/c after blighted ovum in april 2003 and became pregnant again last june. sadly, my son was born still in october 2003 at 22.4 weeks gestation after prom. after a lady partsl delivery, the placenta just wouldn't detach! i was rushed for a d & c, that turned into an emergent situation..i was hemorrhaging. during the emergency surgery, my ob removed the placenta and a large fibroid and but thankfully was able to save my uterus. i had seven units of blood, fresh frozen plasma and platelets. i have recovered pretty quickly!

my husband and i desperately want another child. my ob says that i shouldn't have any problems, but advises that if i do become pregnant, that the delivery should probably be by c-section but a vbac wouldn't be impossible! she hasn't said really what the cause was (just a "fluke"), but she did throw out the possibility of a placenta accreta.

we can ttc in october (she wanted me to wait one year)! i don't fear having a hysterectomy if i can have a healthy baby.

if in fact this was a placenta accreta, do they recur? can i go on to have a successful, full-term pregnancy or at least make it to the 3rd trimester? do you know of anyone that went on to have successful pregnancy after prom and placental accreta?

again, i'm not looking for a diagnosis, just some professional insight!!

thanks in advance!!

Here is an article from the March of Dimes website that discusses accretas and recurrence (not a super high number thankfully): Just an aside, IF you had an accreta, (and I am not really sure you did), you are indeed lucky. A huge number that do have to have hysterectomy, as you know. Try not to worry too much and just know they will know to watch your delivery and postpartum courses very closely.....

I hope this helps. It seems your chances are not super-high. They will watch for it, obviously, which puts you at an advantage. I hope you have a safe, happy and uneventful delivery and best wishes to you and your family!!!! Good luck to you!

Thanks a bunch for the response!! I hope and pray that all goes well for us too! We really want another child!

After reading the MOD link, I feel much better and QUITE LUCKY that I didn't lose my ability conceive!!

If you want to conceive again, my advice would be to seek out a perinatologist for your care. You should be able to have one (as far as ins. is concerned) because of your earlier troubles. I don't know what sort of access you have to care, whether or not you are in the "boonies" or not. The very good perinatologists are better equipped to watch out for you, and can even see placental problems like accreta's via very advanced US many times. I would also see if you can consult with one of these physicians before conceiving to gain better insight, and at least be fully informed for what you may experience if things do not go so well. Good luck to you, I wish you the best and hope all goes well! Sounds like you've got some guardian angel! Sg

thanks sg!! i was seeing a perinatologist during the pregnancy that prom'ed because of ama. i'm certain, i'll be seeing him again. he was awesome. my ob already said that in the event i become pregnant again, she will be referring me to the same peri. i do have a ppo, so it imagine it would be very wise to consult w/ him prior to conceiving! off to make that appointment now!!

btw..i live in the baltimore/washington dc area, so i have quite a few choices as far as providers are concerned!! i feel very lucky in that aspect!!

i was able to give birth but had hemmorhaging because of the pitocin used to induce the labor. my second child that i gave birth to was a percipitate delivery, came out with the cord on her neck 3x with no md on hand and to this day has speech delays. 1 week after she was born i was hemorrhaging, had to have an emergency d & c to get all of the placental fragments out. had been in the er befor that complaining of fever and excess bleeding and was ignored. my ob did not want to do a d & c but i insisted and he pulled out a lot of chunks left behind from the placenta (saved my own life). my third child i started bleeding like a period when labor started and right through it, i was in an unusual amount of pain. the doctor started a pitocin drip and i shut it off. he got mad and said that he would have to do a c-section due to my lack of cooperation. guess what i saved my own life. when they did the c-section they found the placenta embeded into the uterus (accreta) and were able to scrape it out at that time and my post op was uneventful. my fourth child i made sure was an elective c-section, guess what no accreta. i felt safer having the c-section and i am glad that i had one. i used to be an l & d nurse. cannot predict the outcome of pregnancies and was surprised all of the time. :)
