I am currently a nursing student and will graduate in a year. My heart is set on working in the picu. I love it. However, i know that many hospitals dont hire new grads into picu. I am scared that if i dont start in picu i will never have the opportunity to make the transition. My question is what specific hospitals will hire new grads into picu? I have googled this with no luck. I live in the south but am willing to move anywhere in the u.s. After graduating. Any hospitals that you guys work at or know of that are willing to have new grads in picu? Thanks for the help!

Cincinnati Children's Hopsital Medical Center hires new graduates in the Picu also.

Also, just FYI when people say apply early...apply EARLY! I am starting a job in a week and a half in the NICU at Children's National in DC (also have new grads in PICU). I applied in December, was hired at my interview in January, graduated in May and passed my boards in July...I start orientation Aug 24th (8 months after applying). Good Luck!

Hey! PICU at UNC Children's Hospitals hires new grads, but most of them have worked in the unit as an NA or HUC. Not all, but most. Good luck!

I believe that Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock hires new grads into the PICU and into the NICU.

This hospital has been on Forbes' 100 best places to work for years. Awesome place.

Just wanted to add to try and set up a few days to shadow a PICU nurse. I did my senior praticum in the the PICU b/c I "knew" I would love it. And I did love the medical/nursing science side and it caters to my strenghts of assessment and critical thinking ability, BUT, I could not handle the emotional drain. I knew I just wouldn't be able to remain a happy, healthy, person working in that environment for psychological reasons. I hope to later in life (perhaps when I don't have small children), but I am going to wait for now. It is hard. Now, there are many wonderful nurses that can do it, and the best let themselves cry and feel as they need to. The unit I was working on was spectacular, everyone supported everyone, especially if you had a kid who had passed, or was passing. A very close, family-like environment. I hope this small novel helps you somehow, LOL.

Childrens Hospital of Pittsburgh hires new grads into their PICU but with the economy being the way it is, they are probably looking for ppl with experience to avoid training/class costs. If you have the chance to work there, do it. You will see stuff especially related to transplants that a lot of other PICU's across the country never encounter. Their small bowel and liver transplant programs are very well known as well as neurosurgery.
