PICC positions?

Just wondering if hospitals that have PRN PICC nurse positions posted will typically hire someone with no experience? I want something per diem away from bedside nursing and love doing hard sticks, so figured learning to place PICC's would be up my alley. Placing lines and starting IV's all day sounds like a good gig to me! I've tried to get my current facility to train me, but they won't because it's considered a management/supervisor role.

If you can get trained do it! I love placing PICCs.

Heads up though getting on PRN somewhere will probably be difficult if you don't have experience. It's not something you perfect over night. Most places I've seen want experiance, I would keep trying!though!!

One thing that might help is learn what you can about PICCs/CVCs on the book side...read hospital policies, procedures, online articles about caring for PICCs just anything about vascular access placement/care. I honestly feel they helped me. I thought I knew a lot about them from a nurse standpoint but once I got in the position I realized I didn't know hardly anything !

Hi,

There is hope. I just got hired as a PRN IV team RN. I have lots of PIV insertion experience as well as experience accessing ports and central lines, but no experience putting in PICC lines, BUT they said they will teach me in a couple of months once they make sure I am a good fit and am happy there. So, yes, if you get a PRN job as an IV team RN they may be willing to teach you PICC insertion. This may vary from hospital to hospital. Another hospital I interviewed at wouldn't have invested the time or money until I was there full time for at least a year! So it all depends...

both of the per diem RN's on our PICC team had no experience when hired. It's very difficult in our area to find experienced PICC nurses because there are only a handfull of us. Good luck!
