I turned down a case that involved a PICC one time because I told my employer that I did not feel qualified to work with that in the home. They had problems finding anyone to work on that case. I subsequently met another patient family that told me that when their patient had a PICC line at home, the previous agency had an LVN working with it (who did not follow good infection control procedures). My guess would be it is not considered high tech if home health agencies are getting LVNs/LPNs to work with them.

Need to check the state's BON. In many states, LPNs are not allowed to manage PICC lines in the homes. As an RN in HH, we get alot of PICC lines and it is a MUST to be competent in the care and maintenance of them...it is not something I can say I don't feel comfortable doing. Unfortunately, on a regularly scheduled work day- it is just a regular visit though.. not high tech

Is a blood draw through a PICC line and flush considered a high tech visit?
