hello
I have a question...probably a dumb one but I have to ask. I'm gonna be starting CNA classes in May and I'm really excited about it. My main goal is to eventually become an RN but I'm taking baby steps first. I really want to be a nurse cause I love to help and work with people...I'm def. a people person. The only thing is that I have a phobia of puke. I can't stand the sight of it, the smell...just the mere thought that anyone around me is even feeling a little nauseaus make me queezy and I start to spray everything down with disinfectant in case it's contageous!! It's pretty bad.
Do you guys think it's something I'll get over as I gain more experience??
i was so glad to find this post b/c i am totally puk-a-phobic and have been my whole life! i've been stressing about how i'll deal with it... when anyone starts to cough or gag i freak out b/c i worry what'll come out - lol! but then again i worked at a nursing home for a while and saw some woman cough out a bunch of nasty stuff and i just dealt with it at the moment. i think we'll make it through somehow (:
I was looking for a quote I had seen about nurses. My mother is in a nursing home and some of the nurses (some lvn's and some rn's) are just wonderful. I wanted to fax the quote to the nursing station. In the process I came across this thread. Boy do I need you guys.
I was a flight attendant for 30. We weren't required to be nurses in the 1970's. Each time the plane landed a crew came on board and cleaned up. There was always a barf bag in the seat pocket for each passenger. People must have vomited in my early years of flying and I vagely remember carrying the barf bag from the passenger to the trash. We always took the bag by taking a hold of the top of the bag and makin sure it was closed. No problemo. As I got older it became a problem. One time projectile vomit all over one of the walls. Little kids as well as adults using the barf bag. The sound and all that goes with it was unbearable to me. We were stuck in the aisle with the cart and couldn't get away from the sound. I sure as hell didn't feel like "taking a deep breath." On some
airplanes the flight attendant jump seat directly faced a row of passenger seats. I would try to look away. Unbearable. One time enroute to honolulu someone vomited. There was no barf bag so the guy puked in the seat pocket itself. A chain reaction began and there were no barf bags. In short, I freak out if someone gets ill or even thinks they might be ill. Mom came to live with me 5 years ago and two issues arose causing her to start heaving everymorning. i couldn't even help her. i got her a bowl and ran out of the room. i would check on her and plug my ears with my fingers. i always called my girlfriend to drive mom to the er that's how bad it is for me. There's more but you get the picture. I can easily have a panic attack over this (I took early retirement as a flight attendant. I appreciate your posts but since i don't/won't see it alot like nurses i wonder if i will ever get used to it. i didn't have kids. Any tricks of the trade? I lost a ton of weight when mom came to live with me because of this. Thank you

Oh my gosh that is terrible, I couldn't imagine being stuck in the middle of a bunch of people puking all around me. It kind of reminded me of that movie Stand by Me where everyone at the pie eating contest started puking
For me, it was poop. Nothing else fazed me, but poop was the thing that bothered me. Once you've seen one, you've seen 'em all, though. Plus, I find that remembering to be sensitive to the patients and not making them feel embarrassed or disgusting was a great motivator to get over it and "fake it 'til I make it." Now it doesn't get to me at all! It can be done!
Every nurse or tech has their "kryptonite" ....those that say they don't are probably fibbing.....does it keep them from doing their job? NOPE that's where the professional part comes in...doesn't mean it doesn't bother them....u just get on with the job at hand
as someone said previously.....you will get to the point where you can talk about it over lunch :)
