Considering pursuing an accelerated path towards a second career nurse & am interested in hearing input of others.
I live in the Philly area so naturally I have been looking at programs closer by-Drexel ACE, West Chester Advance 2 BSN, Gwynedd Mercy ABSN…
Having my BBA in Marketing & MIS I have to take a nice chunk of prereq courses before I even apply. I found an online option – Portage Learning through Geneva College (a regionally accredited school via Middle States). Convenient & cheap while I continue to work full time until the day comes I start a nursing program. The catch is that the science courses also have online labs.
Has anyone used Portage Learning? Does anyone have any advice on whether or not online labs should be an issue with applying to these programs? Has anyone applied to these programs have advice for a nursing student hopeful?
Please help!!
Thank you!

You should call the schools you are interested in applying to and ask if they will accept those pre reqs. Philly area second degree programs are very competitive to get into and you dont want to risk schools not accepting your pre-reqs. I am not sure how the schools would feel about the online science lab component? Give 'em a call and see!

Is there a specific reason you cannot do your pre requisites on campus? CCP does all of the necessary courses, it's relatively cheap, and there's many campuses. My only worry for you would be them accepting your credits when you apply. Most schools in the area (I am in Philadelphia too) prefer the in class, in person labs.
There is not any specific reason as to why I can't do them on campus at CCP. I currently work Mon-Fri 9-5 and the convenience of the self-paced online course really attracts me. I like to be on my own time. Plus the price is not all that bad IMO.
I have met with an advisor at Gwynedd Mercy's ABSN program and I know for sure they accept Portage Online classes including the sciences with labs. That is actually how I found out about the program.
I finally heard back from **** with the Drexel ACE program. She advised that they generally will accept prereqs with the online structure, sciences too as long as the program is Regionally Accredited--which Portage is.
The frustrating part about this reply is I didn't get a clear answer about the lab portion. I wish there was a clear cut answer about labs. I know some community colleges offer hybrid courses-lecture online and lab in person. But this particular program I had in mind is an online lab. I was pretty clear in my email.
Are you in a nursing program in Philly?

You do know this college only offers the Pre-Nursing degree? Then you have to go through Roberts Wesleyen in New York to actually get your nursing degree. This seems like a very expensive route to me. Geneva is a christian college which is already going to make it expensive. This Portage learning is going to charge you more to take classes through them than on Geneva's campus. Then you will be awarded a pre-nursing degree, which really means what? I've never heard of a pre-nursing job. Then you will have what amounts to another christian university in New York to actually get your degree. Where will clinical be held? Do you have to find your own or do you have to go to New York?
Also, since you all ready have a degree, don't expect much in the way of financial aid. Have you looked into that yet? These are lots of things to ask yourself before diving into something like this.
I do realize that there are pre-nursing degrees offered from this college. However, the Portage Learning is a non-degree seeking program they offer for fulfilling nursing prereqs. Prices for the courses included online tutoring and all study materials, books too. It is pretty comparable to a course offered at the local community colleges plus the books aren't included in the tuition rates. And because I am not looking into getting the pre-nursing degree from Geneva College, I have not looked into the Roberts Wesleyen/New York issue. I am not taking that route. Just fulfilling some prereqs that so far I have received the OK that they will transfer.
I already understand the woes of financial aid and caps on bachelors degrees sadly.
