PHCC LPN Applicants/ New Students

U.S.A. Florida

Published

I was just wondering if there were any PHCC applicants out there just waiting for June/July, and what were your NET scores like? I guess I am trying to get a feel for what the "competition" is like?

Is anybody a new student at PHCC either North or West Campus? What are your feelings about the program? Any regrets or thinking you would have rather gone somewhere else?

I just took the NET on Friday and am debating if I need to retest; got a 97 on math and 73 on comp and 85 on written expression. I put in the app for North and West just to see if I can get on the alternate list; I doubt I will be getting in this go around since it is my first time applying but gotta start somewhere.

Cannot wait to hear from some locals, Liz

Hey Liz. Don't fret too much about financial aid. I'm in the same boat as you. I had to write an appeal for my financial aid, and it still hasn't been approved. But where their is a will, there is a way. I'll see you at the NPR campus with or without financial aid. . :)

gummybear06, wow, you certainly have determination! go you!!!!!

but that is a total bummer that i will be at a different campus than you all. :( [color=dimgray]is anyone going to the brooksville pn program????

7 months!!!!!! that has me excited about bridging over. whew! good news for sure, thank you, liz for the info!!!!

i am in the same boat as you guys with aid. i have my pell grant which is getting most of the schooling but i have to pay $100 a week for childcare for my kids (money i will have to take a loan for) so i know how you feel there. i hope that after i get out of school i can pay the loan back quickly.

ttyl!

7 months for the bridge? Doesn't that basically equal one school year? So that's one year for for LPN program and one year for the bridge program. Totaling two school years, just like the RN program.

Um, 1 school year for each sounds about right, not including the prereq.'s for the RN program, but it sounds like you already have those out of the way.

But, don't hold me to that 7 months, now. That is just what she heard from someone at student services, and they aren't always the most credible or informative.

BTW, I have been searching for scrubs, all white of course, and found some at Big Lots, none white of course. But I thought some of us on a tight budget would want to BOLO for them there; they were just $6. If anyone else knows of some dirt cheap deals on them, please share.

Liz

$6 is a lot cheaper then Wal-mart. The prices for the top and bottoms varied from 12 to 16 dollars if I remember correctly. I paid around 30 dollars for white scrubs I bought there a few months ago. I also know that their is a uniform store at the University Mall in Tampa, but I've never checked out their prices.

So the scrubs aren't purchased at the bookstore? As long as I've been going to PHCC, I've never seen anyone in the nursing program. So I have no idea what their uniform looks like. I spend a lot of time in the library, and can't recall anyone ever wearing scrubs. You would think I would of saw a nursing study group or two. Maybe they just weren't wearing their uniforms....

I'm sure you can buy them at the bookstore, but sometimes things are more expensive there. I thought $6 was pretty good.

I'm pretty sure white scrubs are required along with all white shoes, but I'll have to talk to a friend of mine who went through the LPN program a couple years back. I definitely know that ages ago the RN program required white all over. The RT program gets to wear tan scrubs; lucky ducks. (White shows EVERYthing; if ya know what I mean! LOL)

BTW, out of curiosity, how are you getting childcare covered until 10 or 11 pm? My mother and hubby will be covering me; hubby is sorta freaked, LOL. But he's done it before; I just cringe at the thought of what my house will look like, eek! I'm trying to catch up on stuff now; even though it won't stay clean or neat.

Liz

Oh, sorry, I got Gummy and AngelP mixed up as far as the childcare question went.

Quick Poll: how many of us will be working and going to school, and what will you do for work?

I will be just going to school, and I did previously work for a year as a paralegal, hence my other degree. I realized the job wasn't for me, and needed something with more opportunity for employment, advancement, retirement, healthcare, etc. So, that's my story.

Liz

I will just be going to school. I have been a stay at home mom with the two kids for a while now. The whole "what will you do with the kids for childcare at like 10-11pm" thing is exactly why I will be going to school only. Finding childcare while I am working would pose an even harder problem than finding childcare while in class. I don't have a previous career or degree so working at some minimum wage job would just not cover the childcare expense. Ahhhh, I can't wait till we graduate! LOL:chuckle

I got my orientation packet and was wondering if maybe you guys might know somthing. Re: the FDLE background... are we supposed to do it ourselves or are we suppose to pay the school to do it? I emailed someone with the nursing dept., but I haven't gotten a reply yet. The "Check-Off List" says we need to bring a copy of it to orientation; so, I assume we have to do it, but that sounds really "off" to me.

Also, I have found myself in a pickle re: the cpr cert. The soonest available class at the college begins the day of orientation. I also emailed about that, but I was wondering if I am the only one with this issue or what. Or are all you guys are taking up the class space, LOL.

Peace, Liz

I don't have any kids as of yet, and I don't plan on working during the first semester. I just found out that my financial aid went through, hopefully it will cover all of the tuition. Plus, all of the extras (the list of mandatory supplies :/ ) . After the first semester is over, I'll see how well I handle the workload. If I think I can manage a job, I'll work as a nurse tech during my second semester.

I didn't know that the school offered CPR classes...I'll have to look into that. I was planning on getting cpr certified at the local YMCA. I wonder if it would be cheaper to get certified at school.

As for the background check, please let us know what you've discovered Liz. I'm guessing we have to do it on our own. Where are you guys getting vaccinated? I would prefer to go some place where it isn't too pricey, since I'm on a budget. Do all hospitals provide vaccinations, or do you have to go to a clinic?

I found out we have to do the background check ourselves. I did mine and it was way too easy. $24 was way too much to pay for one sheet of paper, IMO.

As far as the health check/ vaccines, I am seeing our family doctor, thank God for insurance. But for those without insurance, I think the best way to go would be either the health dept. or a walk-in clinic. I think anyplace that does school physicals for school age children would be able to do one for an adult also. Sometimes places runs "specials" for school physicals at the beginning of the school year; so, BOLO for those in the newspaper.

Liz

Thanks for the low down Liz.

We have less then two months to go, before we have to start working our asses off! EEK!!!
