My facility has recently implemented EMR. it has been a little sluggish at the interim, but I must say that I am love it.
With this change I have been irritated in that, the personnel that used to have a legitimate, valuable job, now sit and screw around on the Internet all shift, or do something else that is of no use. This is not personally their fault, or is it??
Have you guessed? My pet peeve is "laziness," or to be generous to those who have been the victim of their responsibilities distributed elsewhere, I can't stand seeing folks on the clock who don't contribute to anything productive. I am NOT talking about the periods during a shift when everyone is without any tasks to tend to. It seems to me (this is where I falter-still optimistic that people have a little sense of pride and personal responsibility) that a Unit Sec that has nothing to do would want to learn some pt care tasks. You just know that as soon as their job is eliminated that it will be someone else's fault. Or let's look at this from another angle; how about short staffing? RN's are expected to take on more pt's because the hospital cannot 'afford ;-)" another RN on the clock!?!? But we have a Unit Sec that surfs the web, and might make 5-6 calls to ask lab to come down during the shift?!?! I think we could easily be given phones to carry to make that 3 second call ourselves.
Anyway, just venting I guess. So I hate to see laziness!!! Nothing grinds me more than a "leach!"

Give it time. My hospital has also just started EMR, freeing up our unit secretaries from one of their busiest tasks.
It is not their fault that their workload has diminished, and they are not qualified/certified to perform patient care.
I understand your frustration, and in time management will come up with a new job description that hopefully keeps them with a more appropriate workload.
