Persuing a non-nursing degree?

Nurses Career Support

Hey guys,

Has anyone pursued another degree after getting their nursing license?

I'm 2 pre-reqs shy of an ADN program BUT, they're either suspended or on hold here.

In the mean time, I really want to pursue journalism/communications and keep my weekend nursing gig. And the cool thing is a lot of my classes can roll over into BSN should I choose to go higher. I'm not exiting nursing, but it'll be on hiatus.

It feels like I'm cheating on Nursing to play in another field. More the merrier or stick to one thing?

I guess it depends on your career goals. If you want to be a nurse, why study journalism/communications? Makes sense if you're trying to get out of nursing. It shouldn't be that hard to take classes during the week and work as a nurse on the weekends, if that's cool with your employer. Just out of curiosity, what profession do you have in mind with that field of study?

My first degree was BA in journalism.... loved writing (still do) but HATED doing it for a living.

Nurses are an educated workforce - degrees in other fields are not uncommon. Lots of 'happy learners' who enjoy obtaining more education. But if your primary focus is on an educational credential to launch your nursing career, I agree with TU RN's advice ^^^^.
