Personal Toll of Nursing School

Published

I'm a wife/mom with 3 kids going back to school. In carving out a career path to support my family, I find nursing school to be the toughest goal I've ever set for myself. I love the study, I love the patient care. However, it also takes a sacrifice only understood by other nursing students. I have recently dropped down to part time to pass Pharm, and realized that I haven't been putting enough time into my family. Nursing school will suck the life out of your personal world if you let it! I'm charging on, but now I'm doing it at a pace that is comfortable for me. Can anyone else out there relate?

I can relate as well and I am finding that it IS hard, but I WILL get through it! I have 4 children 10, 8, 5, 2 and I am going to school part time. Sure, I would have loved to have gotten my prereqs done in three semesters (fall, spring & summer), but my kids come first! It will take me 4 semesters to get them out of the way and I will be taking this summer off and going back in the fall. Right now I am in my second semester and if I get accepted, I will be in nursing school in the fall of '11. All of my studying gets done when the kids go to bed. Sure, I would love to be in bed too, but that's the sacrafice I have to make for now!
