Perpetuating the myths

Nurses General Nursing

I was just thinking about some rumors/false information that we hear before, during, or after nursing school that we believe only to find out our beliefs were wrong. I'll give a couple examples:

1. I thought that if you get retested for TB too soon, the 2nd test will come up positive.

2. I also thought some NCLEX-RN test takers are randomly selected to take all 265 questions.

What about y'all? When did you fall for the hype?

Ah, the full moon myth . . . that has always bugged me because it is not true.

Aug. 1, 2007-Ever whacked your thumb with a hammer, or wrenched your back after lifting a heavy box, and blamed the full moon? It's a popular notion, but there's no cosmic connection, Austrian government researchers said Tuesday.

As for other forms of craziness, the moon seems to have no effect. Researchers have reviewed logs for calls to police stations, consultations to psychiatrists, homicides, emergency room visits, and other measures of our daily burden of madness. They found no consistent relationship, one way or another, with the moon.

I myself say "quiet" every shift. No correlation in my anecdotal test. :D

I just don't believe that my saying "quiet" has anything to do with some drunk getting in an accident.

Well I have 17 years experience with Dementia patients and can tell you that the full moon does indeed have an effect on them! It happens every time but it doesn't affect them all.

As for the 'Q' word, never uttered on shift!:lol2::lol2:
