I mentioned to a friend of mine that, as an Excelsior College graduate, I wanted to open a week long clinic to help people pass the CPNE. Apparently, she ran to work and blabbed all about it because yesterday she told me there are a couple of people interested in signing up.
This was just an idea to me for a long time, but now I have really got to thinking about this, and wonder how would I even get started? I live on a farm with a nice garage/basement that would be a good workshop/classroom but I wouldn't even know where to buy the practice mannequins.
Do I need a special license? Do I have to meet certain regulations?
My husband thinks I'm crazy but I feel like I could make this work. I wanted to offer extra things, like the option to stay at my home during the week of the workshop with free breakfast instead of having to rent a motel, free use of the hot tub, maybe a pontoon boat ride around the lake one afternoon toward the end of the workshop...things to make it kind of like a vacation in addition to the workshop. I live 60 miles from Nashville so for people who fly in I wanted to even arrange to come pick them up...I don't know. I had always thought of this idea as a fun pipe dream but now that I have heard there may be people interested maybe it is more realistic than I thought?
Please advise.

CPNE is the clinical examination needed to pass the external degree program offered by Regents College.
(I am a grad as well, although from back in the dark ages)
FWIW, I think a clinic is a good idea but I'd be careful of any sort of liability issues re: not passing.
Clinical Performance in Nursing Examination. It is a weekend clinical that measures student performance in crtain areas of patient care, in addition to a 4 part lab each student must pass (IM/SQ injection, IVPB, IV push and wound care).
It has been described by many as one of the most stressful things they have encountered in their nursing career. Having been there myself, I can say this is definitely true. There are a handful of these types of workshops around the country. Some people need them, some people don't. I went to a workshop and do not feel like I could have passed without it. I would like to offer the same type of service to future RN's.
I would be careful, of the many things to consider, that Excelsior does not have an issue with your providng this service as a new graduate of their program. In some states, and I am certified in the state of Colorado, you do need to have special certification to qualify as an instructor. Check with the Board of Nursing for your State. Read the contract from Regents that you signed (or get a copy from the school) there may be a reciprocity issue with providing this service.
Where would you get your training material? Certainly a format would be the program you just finished but again, the liability of copywriting comes to mind. Many cautions to consider here.
Be sure to, with any business venture, sign up with a business support group to write a Business Plan. See this stickey:

I hope that helps for starters. The world of Entrepreneurship is paved with someone who can "do it", "make it", and provide for better services... but ya gotta watch the litigious environment that may be unfolding. A Business Plan with support will help aleviate many expensive mistakes.
