Peds Pulmonary Unit??

Published

Hi everyone! I'm a RN with 3 years of mom/baby experience and am now interviewing for a pediatric pulmonary position. I was wondering if someone could give me some info on what that entails. I'm assuming RSV maybe CF? Any info would be really appreciated! Thanks!

Yes, the position would include things like RSV and CF, but it's so much more than that! Children with chronic lung diseases such as what used to be called "bronchopulmonary dysplasia" and children with asthma will be a large percentage of your patient cohort. You may see children with pulmonary hypertension +/- cardiac anomalies, children with tracheostomies +/- mechanical ventilation (in conjunction with ENT), children with neuromuscular diseases and ineffective cough, children with pulmonary ciliary dyskinesia and children with bronchiolitis obliterans. There are lots of conditions that affect the lungs that could bring a child to your clinic. Your responsibilities could include assisting with or administering pulmonary function tests (spirometry, plethysmography), administering RSV prophylaxis, teaching the use of inhalers, nebulizers and the drugs they administer, monitoring effectiveness of treatment, teaching parents to manage airways (portable suction), home oxygen teaching, and many other tasks.

Oh I should mention it's for a hospital position. Thank you for all that info!

Hope you like sputum!

Kidding aside, it would be a great environment to start in peads

At the pediatric hospital I worked at, one of the 3 medical floors was designated for Pulmonary and GI patients. The Pulmonary patient population was primarily CF patients.
