Pediatrics Interview Questions

Thank you in advance for your help... this is a long post and I appreciate your HONEST and experienced answers. :)

Okay here goes... I am graduating nursing school in May and have an interview on Friday at a big children's hospital in my home state. I am really interested in working here but am trying not to get my hopes up too much.

My questions are:

Is it going to be a major drawback that I have not had a LOT of pediatric clinical experience? I have worked with children some in other ways and I love kids, but have not in nursing much- our clinicals in Peds were short, and an externship I applied for put me on an adult unit... etc. etc. I am going to have my specialty rotation (April-May) in a Shriners pediatrics hospital, so I will get more experience but I don't have it right now. I did love our Peds rotation. And I got some great care from nurses when I was a kid which is a lot of why I want to do pediatrics. I just don't know how to approach if they ask about my limited peds experience.

Also... what are some questions specific to a children's hospital that I should be prepared for? I know this may seem an obvious question to some of you, but I am not that great at interviews and want to be totally prepared... at least as much as possible!

I thank you in advance for your answers... you are awesome. :Melody:

I have finished all my classroom work and am starting my 8th week with a preceptor tomorrow. I am working on the pediatric float team at the childrens hospital, so I get training on all the units in the hospital. Last week I was in the NICU and this week I start my training in the PICU. Things are going well, and I really like the hospital I am working for. I hope everyone has a good experience as well.

Good luck everyone!!

Hey I know it's been a long time, I was just looking through some of my old posts and came across this thread again, wondering how you all are doing now?

I guess I am still kind of overwhelmed and realizing every day what I still have to learn. But I realize that I picked the right place to work for me right now! The other nurses are still really supportive which helps. And I'm still liking the kids!! :) And finally getting to where I can answer almost half :p of a parent's questions on the first go-round with something more than "I don't know right off hand but I'll definitely check it out for you!!"

Also, getting used to nights has taken me a while but I'm closer now.

I have made more mistakes than I'd like but I am still hopeful. I only think of quitting as a good option every other shift or so :p

But I would really really like to hear from you all again!!! I hope things are going well for you too. Take care.

I am interviewing for my 1st nursing job Next week, they just called me today.

Do you have any advice any likely question. I want to be better prepared

Hi love-nursing, I just stumbled upon this post, I was wondering how your interview went and if you got the job. I also received a call from the local Children's Hospital this morning for an interview on Monday. I am so nervous to say the least. I don't know where to start with this interview process except the dress part, I'm a real fashionista so no problem there, but as far as the questions I'll be asked, my responses, etc. Also, I feel that I'm at a real disadvantage since didn't actually have a Peds rotation/clinical. So, how do I explain clinical experience, all I can say is I enjoy being in the company of kids, watching them grow and get well. If anyone has any ideas or tips please let me.....thanks in advance
