Considering transfer to Motherbaby from NICU...
Hi Nicugal, to answer your question no I'm not simply waiting for someone to notice me floundering. If I have a question or an issue arises I will most definitely seek help and get some answers. However, if you fully read my post I was explaining that no one is helpful towards me although they may ask one another if help is needed with anything. It would be nice if help was offered in the same manner sometimes than only when I'm seeking it being that I'm new there. Also, this was not an issue where I came and everyone worked together it was just a hellish med-surg unit! Although this is where I want to be career wise, I'm quickly realizing that as my dad always told us growing up that a lot of the times you have to take the bitter with the sweet and I suppose this is one those times....Thanks for your reply though.

Considering transfer to Motherbaby from NICU...
Has anyone transferred to Motherbaby from NICU and gained a better job satisfaction? I started in a level III NICU a few months ago in what I thought would be my dream job, I have found it to be highly stressful and anxiety driven amongst other things. I came from med-surg working with adults and my co-workers there were great, they exercised teamwork, and care/concern for one another. However, being new off orientation, I get no help if needed from anyone (although I overhear them asking one another if help is needed throughout the shift), I feel so unwelcome and am scared that I can't really count on anyone! No one hardly even talks to me as if I have the plague and I've found a couple of friends currently working in motherbaby who are pulled to our floor some nights than on my own. I'd hate to rush things in transferring but I absolutely dread going in on most nights and am very unhappy there. My hubby doesn't think I should talk to the NM about how I'm feeling since I'm not eligible to transfer for another 2 months. It's very frustrating and I'm not exactly sure what I should do, I don't want to work at a different hospital or facility. Has anyone else been in this type of situation or similar?

How has All Nurses.com helped you!?!
AN is a great place to vent after having a long and stressful day be it work, school, co-workers u name it, these people are there for you! I truly believe it's a Godsend and has also sent good vibes my way because every post or thread that I've been a part of has resulted in a happy ending.....from graduating NS, NCLEX, and landing dream job in NICU which I start on Sep 26th, can't wait! I even recall while taking NCLEX, and referring back to the Infection Control mneumonic (My Chicken Hez TB) I'd gotten from AN and was able to apply it to the overload of infection control questions I had during the exam. It was awesome, and I'm quite sure I got a lot of those correct since I'd studied it extensively. I even shared it with classmates who all said it definitely helped with their infection control questions as well. THANKS AN for the tips, support and encouragement provided! U all totally rock.....

New Grad NICU Support Thread
Thanks irish nurse for the info and along with everyone else, I will keep it all in mind on my NICU journey. While in school, I'd always thought for sure OB/L&D was where I wanted to be, that was only until my third day while precepting in L&D, my preceptor and I ended up having to spend the rest of the day in the NICU due to short-staffing. OMG! After 5 minutes of being there I was sold! One nurse allowed me to give feedings thru g-tubes, showed me how to warm the feedings, reposition them, and of course rock, hold, and feed the growers. I enjoyed every minute of being in the NICU more so than I ever had while in L&D; I felt as though this area was my calling. Funny thing is though, I had never given it one thought before, just never seemed to cross my mind I suppose until I was actually exposed. Ever since that wonderful experience, my eyes have been set in the specialty. As it turns out, since graduating this past May, trying to get any job in a hospital in my area is like pulling teeth. So I've ended up accepting a job in a LTC facility since they were the first to offer employment. Meanwhile, I've been in contact with the Nurse recruiter at our local Children's hospital for a position I put in for on their CVICU. She's told me that I will definitely be considered once they start interviewing and to keep in touch with her. I've even went so far as signing up as a volunteer in this same Children's hospital in their NICU. Nonetheless, I am staying optimistic and praying that I will one day land a position in a NICU as you all have and start taking care of these little angels. I am so happy for all of you (and a tad bit jealous I have to admit) that have been able to find your calling in the NICU, so please keep posting your experiences as this is what also keeps me going.:redpinkhe 2Nurture1

A little "pick me up" for students and new grads
Wow....I couldn't have said it better! I have been explaining this very same thing to a few people starting NS this fall. To go ahead now and be ahead of the game by getting a job as a tech, Nurse aid, CNA, something to help you stand out above the rest as a new grad. I wish someone had told me this back then. Nearly everyone in my class who worked as techs or in some sort of medical capacity either had jobs lined up before graduation or were promoted into a RN position on the floor they worked on as a tech.... I am also a new grad and am having THE hardest time getting a job in a hospital. However, I landed a job in LTC, the last place I'd said to ever work. Grateful to have a job, yes I am, but still praying, hoping, and keeping the Faith that someday I will eventually find myself in NICU!:heartbeat Wishing you all the best in MICU, I'm sure with time you will do just fine....

Just got hired onto PICU!!! :D
Congratulations on your transfer today into PICU, I too am trying my best to get a position at our Children's Hospital (although my heart is in NICU), but times are very hard for new grads at the moment. However, I am still keeping the FAITH that I will be blessed with this peds CVICU position I applied for recently. I'm sure with your compassion and dedication, you will do just fine, I am so happy for you....wishing you all the best. Be blessed:heartbeat

Did majority of you NICU nurses begin your nursing career in LTC or elsewhere?
Thank you all dearly for the replies......I started at the LTC facility today and so far so good, but as I look at those residents, I can't help but think about the little babies I wish to care for instead. I will definitely look into some volunteer opportunities here locally, and hopefully I will someday find my NICU home.......:redbeathe

Did majority of you NICU nurses begin your nursing career in LTC or elsewhere?
Hello NICU nurses, I'm a new grad, (May 2011) and am having such a hard time landing a NICU job fresh out of school. So, I applied at the last place on earth I thought I'd ever considered working, in a LTC nursing home facility and I actually got the job. I start next week, but I was just wondering whether you all also had to start off in a not so desirable position and kinda work your way up or if you went right into it. I have spoken with several nursing recruiters at major hospitals in the area and the census is either they're not accepting new grads into their NICU, it requires experience, or they simply don't have anything available. My main concern is that my LTC experience won't be feasible or even considered by any hospitals for a position in the NICU. Should I be worried? Your thoughts and insight are highly appreciated:)

Passed NCLEX-RN
Congratulations to us all! PVT works also. I checked yesterday before I got home from taking NCLEX, and it would not allow me to register again, I got the good pop up. When I got up this morning, I saw my name on state BON site. What a wonderful feeling it is.....now if only I could find a job. LOL!
